i've not talked about this before and i don't know if this floats anybody elses boat - I love modernist architecture from the revolution into the 1970s... it was one of the reasons I went to Russia and Lithuania last year to check out some of the buildings before they disappear... i'm going to Slovakia in the spring to have a look at some more. there is more hope of a change in attitude towards these buildings in the ex-soviet states which is very good news

these books are particularly good if you're interested

they are the same modern/modernist/modernism = but they aren't what we call contemporary (recent, post-modern or even retro-modern) - so when people say i hate modern architecture they normally mean contemporary (shitey 'urban' flats or skyscrapers that all look the same with zero imagination) rather than say something Functionalist like Alvar Aalto or Rationalist like the Bauhaus or say some thing more Industrial like Jean Prouve = although they could mean that too.

thanks H, but i'm guessing this topic is dry to most people here :)

this book is the best confidence builder and top-level explanation I've read :)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/isms-Understanding-Architecture-Jeremy-Melvin/dp/0713674741/

this one is worth borrowing from the library too

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Story-Architecture-Norman-Foster/dp/0751348813/

my tip is to pick one style you like - say art deco and try to find out alot of about it then just check out other things as you find them... suppose kind of like music - don't try to work it all out

:)

They build those like that cause the concrete blocks whent out wrong from factory and they couldn't afford new ones.

It was meant to have straight angles everywhere.

I saw the Richard Rogers thing last night, that episodes of Grand Designs and a stint of level designing at work has got me all fired up over architecture.

I liked Rogers he came across has a genuinely likable chap - turning the practise into a charity and very keen to make sure that all the people working for him get their credits too.

When I was at college I wanted to be an architect, but fell out of love with academia so it wasn't to be.
