They did experiments on babies in the 20ies - apparently babies do not know fear when born, but can be taught using rats and pavlovian training.

its hard to say how much genetics contributes to the behaviour of children, or anyone for that matter, but i reckon that the environment in which they grow up is more important so if there are kids that are genetically predisposed towards aggressive behaviour they wont necessarily show it. but, i dunno, im just guessing. kind of seems that way to me.

our daughter is really friendly but we've met kids at other kids birthday parties who were quite aggressive. one boy in particular was really aggro but his mum didnt do anything about it, she just ignored it, and his dad is out of the picture..so im sure that has some effect.

and yeah, having a kid is really good fun, now she is old enough to understand what we say and she can communicate its great. lots of singing, dancing and having a laugh. up until about 14 months old or so it was a lot harder than it is now.

I'm currently about 70% nature and 30% nurture after reading Steven Pinker's "Blank Slate". Full of stuff about twin studies with twins raised in different environments showing higher correlations than unrelated children raised in the same environment. Also, he makes a good and obvious point that every parent with more than one child knows that they have completely different personalities right from day one. It's all about traits and tendencies rather than any sort of "determinism".. but I think it's pretty powerful. Not sure you can nurture an aggressive trait away.

I also don't know, am guessing, and it is seeming this way to me.

Yeah it can be a tricky one.. the local primary is pretty good though.. one of the best in the borough luckily. Still.. there's no guarantee he'll get in even though he's local. All the decent schools get hugely over subscribed.

It would take a big situation to make me consider anything outside of the state sector though (apart from the need for a fuck load of extra cash). There was a doc on the bbc a while ago comparing results from state/private education and they pretty much tally-up... with state schools faring slightly better.

He's only three! AAAARRGHHH

my bother's kids are both total annoying spaztics. its totally nurture cos their mum is a thick as shit monghead that lets them do whatever they want. her aspirations for them are so low and she thinks kids should be able to do whatever they want (because kids are like that)... and they is well living up to it. they are both educationally backwards for their age and have behavioural issues. the 9yo behaves like a 4 yo and the 5yo has no idea of even simple things.

if you're a fucking mong, your kids will be too. sad as that is.

I pretty much hold with this BUT the nurture part only governs the macro trajectory of the kid's life; so if they're going to excel academically, or be violent, or be extremely sociable or whatever then they will and all the 'parenting' gubbins will have very little effect on that; what the nurture stuff doesn't control is the micro part of life. How you get on in the present moment is totally down to what you put into it, and though that doesn't have so much repercussions in the long term, it can make the difference between a brilliant life and a horrible horrible life. It always amazes me on things like House Of Tiny Tearaways how drastically a few basic techniques re teaching kids boundaries etc can make the difference between abject misery and fun......

Congrats to all the future parents! :) A few of my mates have been having kids in the last few years and seem to be coping fine as do most people. You can kiss goodbye to the social life for a while mind. ;)
