12 monkeys is a damn good movie.
what i heard too, is that the SARS virus came out of a region in china there in the past came a lot of different virus(? whats the plural?) from. and this one could kill millions of people, like one from that region did in the 20ies of the last century iirc

hmm....
given my job i wish i could offer us all some reassurance, the UK World Health Orgainisation labs for looking into this are just down the corridor from me, and to be honest they have been clueless for weeks despite getting a load of extra folk in, until now
the vibe now is that they have an agent, once they validate some assays it will be alot easier for them to implement much more effective surveillance and begin to control its spread, they are all busy (and talented) girls and boys here so lets hope we get some good news soon....
as for the concern about a 1918 style 'flu pandemic , these fears are unfounded because its not a 'flu virus, also in 1918 lots of the deaths were due to secondary bacterial infections which could now be controlled with antibiotics which they did not have then,
though i do admit think the scariest bit was seeing my Proffessor ( one of the UK's leading experts ) on TV saying he was less concerned about HIV when it first appeared....
now back to the music

have you ever read James Herbert´s novel "1948"?
It´s really great.
it is about a weapon hitler used in this sci fi novel as retaliation.
he sent some v2 rockets to London, which contained a kind of virus. Consequently, all people in the city died an agonizing death , because the virus made their blood o clot within some minutes inside their veins until embolism occurred.
Only people with AB negative survived. This virus spread quickly throughout the world.
Hmm. SARS is for me only another disease.
Much worse are biological weapons such as this fictive weapon of retaliation.
OR remember "The Stand" by stephen king. Super flu.

Flu is more contagious than this. As with flu, it seems to be effecting the usual areas of the populus the worst - elderly and infirm.

and if i remember higher history correctly the health of people after ww1 didn't help either.

at the end of the day millions of people are dying from infectious diseases every year mostly in the developing world be it Malaria, HIV, Hepatitis, Tuberculosis and indeed 'flu etc....
SARS is another one to add to the list, lets hope drug companies get intersted in it quickly, which they will as it is infecting rich westerners, which will always guarentee some return on their investment

mainly working on hepatitis B at the moment, basically i am doing a whole bunch of functional assays to look at the mechanisms by which this virus becomes resistant to drugs and vaccines, sometimes both at the same time which is no good
sorry to hear about the population genetics, its all a bit nae joy, its a bit madder for viruses than flies though, cos evolution is so stupidly fast it can be studied in an infected patient over the course of months ( as opposed to millions of years for other organisms )
where did you do your work? glasgow?

actually had a mate whose job it was to study sheep movements in fields for a whole summer...
basically he had to sit at the side with a little chart and note where they all went in the field every few minutes, i think they thought there might be a "master sheep" or something that they all followed
cannot tell you the results of the study though, but needless to say, its the most 'stoners' job i have heard of ( apart from when i used to dive an ice-cream van )

microbial evolution i always found relatively exciting for exactly the reason u say - you can actually do evolution experiments, try evolving things on petri dishes. they were the only talks i ever stayed awake in at seminars.
i mean, i could describe what i was doing in more interesting terms by saying i was investigating the evolution of life history traits, trying to discover the evolutionary cause of ageing. but really i was just counting flies - having spent nearly 3 years twisting my head round it, i'm not sure i actually believe a lot of evolutionary theory, and i was at the very top of the tree really working in brian charlesworth's lab at edinburgh. i sort of miss all the brain stimulation, and feel a bit bad cos i was quite good at it and now i'm just treading water doing a pretty stoopid job. but fuck it. there's more to life than work - not a lot of the scientists i was workin with would agree. the other big reason i left.

I'm still worried by my opening a bottle at 2:30am. I've just been called a chufter for admiting to drinking white wine.
You should drink whatever you want to. At least you don't resort to Domestos.

yep he's the man! pretty much the only thing i watch regularly these days.
about SARS: it's kinda weird, when they first talked about it on telly my first thought was that the whole story was made up as a distraction for the coming iraq war, to keep the world press engaged. guess that was just paranoia but hey who knows.

Wenn man sagt Rumsfeld ist toericht, dann ist das auch juristisch abgesicherter. Das klingt dann so als ob er noch resozialisierbar waere.
