Cameo Word Up Lyrics

Your pretty ladies around the world
Got a weird thing to show you
So tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma too
we're about to go down
And you know just what to do
Wave your hands in the air like you don't care
Gilde by the people as they start to look and stare
Do your dance, do your dance, do your dance quick mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard

Now all you sucker DJ's who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason and we know the reason why
Why you put on thoso airs and you act real cool
Got to realise that you're acting like fools
If there's music we can use it
You're free to dance
We don't have the time for psychological romance
No romance, no romance, no romance for me mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway

Dial L for love, Dial L for love, Dial L for love
W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP, W.O.R.D. UP

Yeh you sucker DJ's who think you're fly
There's got to be a reason and we know the reason why
Why you put on thoso airs and you act real cool
Got to realise that you're acting like fools
No romance, no romance, no romance for me mamma
Come on baby tell me what's the word

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard

Word up everybody says
When you hear the call you've got to get it underway
Word up it's the code word
No matter where you say it you know that you'll be heard

you know what is a really fucking good track..., 'Trapped' by Colonel Abrahams - although the lyric is a bit dodgy... I got a mint copy from Oxfam the other day for 50p.

tuff electo-pop music from the late 80s rules.

its fucking cool and the accapella on the b-side is cool too. i bought it for a girlfriend's birthday a couple of years ago, we were in a bar and she asked the DJ to put it on and he played it twice and the crowd went crazy

cristian used to do a really good mix of the vocal and some UR track i cant remember which one but it was wicked, around 96/97...perfect for bootlegging but you wouldnt want to piss mike banks off

ANYWAY
phil - nike bloke sounds NOTHING like jamie. are you daft?

cheers for links IP.
nestle are evil satan.
multinationals grrrrr!!!!!
question is - with all these musical types, and artists on the board, who would sell their art for advertising to certain companies? money is good, etc etc.. its a tricky one, stay humble and hungry, suck the corporate cock? I would like to think I would stay humble and hungry....

Lady E
2nd April 2003, 12:11
its certainly a tough one. luckily no-one has ever offered us any corporate cock to suck so we've never had to make the tough decision.
if artistically it could be a good project (like aphx / pirelli) then you have to think about how much you could do with that cash. at the moment something like that could save us, we are ALWAYS on the brink of financial meltdown.
but i know cristian and i would find it incredibly hard to make that decision to do an advert or whatever because a line has been crossed and you cant go back.
mind you ive seen people dissing cristian on Overload a while ago for being a 'sell-out' for doing an album for novamute, which was then totally independent so whatever you do someone will always cristicise your credibility.

emma,

yeah - its a tricky one, similiar situation for me, always running round like a blue arsed fly to make ends meet.

its a fucking tricky one to judge.
people say a lot of people sell out, Jello Biafra got knee capped by ex-fans of the dead kennedy's as they claimed he had sold out (he is DEF. one of the least selling out people in the music world).

big $$$ could be used well, and there is always the, "play them at their own game" - if they are gonna give us X for doing fuck all (take pirelli, aphex, that wasa track he had written before, so no big hassle, and mega bucks!).

I guess it is something that can only be judged when the time occurs.

Lady E
2nd April 2003, 13:05
what happened with jello and DKs though?
i saw him a few years ago doing spoken word (really brilliant) and he was saying that the rest of the DKs wanted to allow 'holiday in cambodia' to be used on some ad - and he refused so they took him and alternative tentacles to court.

dont they play without him now?

it gets even harder when you have children to support to make the morally right decisions . we thought maybe you could divert some of the funds - like 10% - you received to an organisation that are fighting the worst ravages of whoever paid you the cash.

phil

doing adverts is a bit bogus..but rent don't pay itself.

Thud

anyway - i have recently moved home with my folks and got a job working on a multi-million pound IT project with a company who will work for any corporate giant that comes along, just so long as they have big enough ££££. I consider this to be a sell-out of the highest order, but one I have had to do as I had run up debts from buying studio kit and from not working for months whilst i tried to make music that would make me some kind of living (i came out of it with an album's worth of stuff of which 1 track was used and I got £200) - so it's like, where do you draw the line? Is working for a giant multi-national in order to faciliate making underground music selling out or using the powers that be to my own devices? It's the same for musicians I'm guessing - what happens if you do music for a GAP Advert and then give 1/2 the money to anti-globablisation charities?

The last people that should be judges are always the first ones to pass judgement (and anyone who hits jello biafra should have their knackers smashed to a pulp) - best to ignore them and go with what your conscience says i reckon.

Thud
2nd April 2003, 13:27
from reading the alternative tentacles website the other day it seems the re-formed DKs are just a total mess - their new lead singer recently dedicated Holiday In Cambodia to all the US troops going out to the gulf, and dedicated Kill The Poor to 'the USA'... slightly missing the point methinks - aparently the band suck too and sound like they haven't rehearsed. i do feel really sorry for jello - he gets such a rough time of it all

decadnids
2nd April 2003, 13:43
Yeah good points Thud. and phil and emma.
its a tricky old thing.

Jello - some punk fans claimed he sold out when he started doing spoken word stuff, because he wasn't "punk" or their definition of punk.

jello is a big influence on me - its a shame DK have now turned into some lame ass shite band, jello must be fuming.

Yeah emma, a I was at the jello talk, and thats my point, the rest of DK wanted to let levi's use one of their songs, jello had written it and refused them the rights to do it, so he def. didnt suck the corporate cock...

Thud
2nd April 2003, 14:07
jello's a v. big influence for me too - i was never that much into punk, or political music and i think that's maybe cos the DKs were one of the first 'proper' bands i got into (after my heavy metal phase aged 11-12) and basically, no-one else touches what Jello did lyrics and attitude wise. the band were good, but if ever there was a case of the music playing second fiddle to the message - it was the DKs. the LARD stuff JB is doing nowadays is ace, although i haven;t heard the last Lp they did, but i read a review of the ipecac new years eve gig where JB joined fantomas on stage for the last 1/2 hour. Mike Patton, The Melvins and Jello Biafra on one stage. that's my kinda gig.

speaking of music and commercials, here in the states there used to be an anti-drug commercial... with aphex twin's boy/girl song as the music...

I have heard polygon window being played in the background on Newsnight recently, it was when they were showing some fancy brass eye style graphs or something.

indeed piscaries...

my respect goes to Jello Biafra, but his path isn't necessaruily right for other artists...
however, LARD is everywhere

originally by Jello Biafra
Lard - The answer
Lard - The dancer
Lard - The ointment
Lard - The dream
Absorb it
Inflame it
Respect it
Molest it
The country right now just wants to be
Soothed, and told it doesn't have to pay or
Sacrifice or learn
No one is over the hill
When the mountain comes to Mohammed
