Is it dangerous to go in to a trance?

I don't think that 'trancing out' on the dancefloor is a particularly deep state of trance.

various depths of trance are purported to be reached by:

watching tv for long periods of time
repetitive mundance tasks
undergoing a course of hypnotherapy
particpating in sex with a partner
meditation
religious fervour - such as shamanistic ritual and dervish dance
ingesting psychotropic substances

can't think of anymore at present..can anyone add to knowledge here?

has anyone here reached a state which they considered 'trance'?

what purpose do u think 'trance' holds for an individual?

what do the no-future folk think of trance and trancelike states?

Personally i find them quite enjoyable, either drug induced or ones reached through meditation.....as for whether they are "good" or "bad"....surely those are sociaetally prosrcibed evaluations....

Correct me if i am wrong though ...

I walk about in a trance the majority of the time. It saves me having to bring myself back down to the level of the prolataria and, god forbid, actually deal with them.

...if this is true i am in a trance most of the time. wearing my slippers and litening to miles davis sends me into a bit of a trance. Sometimes when i am talking to people i go in a trance, i then have to pretend i have been listening to them.

Plato described a trance state as a form of madness which was highly desirable.
Trance states can be achieved though the use of stress and deprivation, repetition and hypnosis, boredom and solitary confinement.
I recommend 'Genesis P-Orridge and Z'ev - Direction of Travel' CD.

NLP - beware!!!!
I personally, have a big thing about NLP - I guess it is due to the fact that I have studied quite a lot in the occult world, and know the sources from where these people have gathered their knowledge, and then they bandy this in the corporate world!.

I employ trance like states quite a lot of the time, generally using visualisation techniques.

What do u mean decadnids? tell us more..

I aim for trance states but go into convulsive fits instead.

NLP - co created by Richard Bandler.
to me, and some people might not see this as a problem, NLP takes techniques that have been around for ages and packages them into a nice consumer friendly, ready to go $$$$ for the NLP (tm). sell it to the corporate masses, arse wank! like life coaches and life style guru's.

I do not agree with any form of money making from this sort of thing. it is a personal thing, and people will probably argue different.

NLP is one of my pet hates, like scientology is a pet hate of mine, and the term electronica and idm. We all have them.

go and discover for yourself, and judge as you feel fit.

phil
31st March 2003, 13:52
What techniques does it borrow from the occult deca??

ok
i mostly agree with you , decadnids, re: nlp,
however -
i think the phrase - 'neuro linguistic programming' is wonder-ful, and as far as i know, the practice of simliar techniques exist in a non-commercial form in the applied psychology 'realm' of cognitive behavioural therapy.

our language/thought do affect our state of mind and consciousness (anyone here read Ouspensky?)

With regards to Bandler selling 'language and thought techniques' to managerial types, well, I guess there has to be something for them to spend their training budget on :|

As for nlp 'borrowing' techniques from the 'occult', i personally find this term (which means 'hidden') a little misleading. I thought these techniques were borrowed from tibetan tantra?

Can anyone clarify further, please?

Have u seen this?!
They've TRADEMARKED the phrase NLP™ !!!

charlatans! meme-peddlars!

as far as i know, NLP has little to do with trance states

the words 'trance' means
'a state of dread, doubt, or suspense'
'prolonged suspension of consciousness',
'hypnotic condition'
'An intermediate state between sleeping and waking'
'a stunned or dazed state'
'a state of mental abstraction from external things'
'absorption'
'exhaltation'
'ecstacy' (from the Greek ex-stasis , meaning ‘outside of yourself’)

fuck, then I too am in a trance all the time.

seriously,
I trance out sometimes. sometimes when I dj I get really into the music and I block everything out and I will forget what records I just played. I just go with it. as for meditation, I have always wanted to get into it and I have tried it so many times but I just can't quiet my mind. my mind is always going. I am always thinking about a couple things at once and I can never slow it down. and when I tried to meditate I would always just sit there and relax a bit, but my mind is saying "ok, I am meditating. yup I am still meditating. and now I continue to meditate." and I know that you are supposed to clear your mind. I think I need some coaching.

the meaning for 'dread n' doubt' was first used in the middle ages, and has fallen out of common usage now :) (yes, i ate a lexicon)

nowadays, trance refers to the other meanings :)

ever heard of the famous no-future tshirt regarding trance?
[rant]
i think trance should be banned from the world myself...
but pop a Lsd tab, and you'll feel like yr flying in a goa trance floor, you body feels like it moving itself... it funny cause with all those analog twiddling ( like acid) it always jumps to mind that it really tunes you into the music when yr off yr face.. you mind hears what your ears dont... like in many situations but with trance i assume it kinda works naturally , dont know why.. dont know if this is pshysically possible... and trance is more of what that actual meaning of the word discribes... in that case...
i kinda all makes sense, trance being all waveforms and alagorythms repititive rubbish

The trance word can easily be used to divert the topic though, with it being so vast.. like nowadays u get goa trance, isreal trance, pysch trance, ambient trance. do you know some serious trance heads? the fuckin listen to music accroding to time of day..! some albums are morning albums, so they only get heard in the morning....like morn evening, afternoon, right after teaa, dinner, midnight snack etc. albums... either that or they have nightmares of Ganesh and Krishna

my post means.. that trance is what ppl musically advance to.. after techno, dance, ethnic music etc. and it's a damn bad direction to move..
oh.. and going to india? that so '99! thailand? hope u meet leonardo! cape town? they dance with lions down there!
TRANCE IS FASHIONABLE BUT IN BAD TASTE WISE
[/rant over]

ps. this discussion leads to the same road that mp3's cross.. good & bad all at once.. matters who you are, where and how

trancing out is a good thing sometimes, esspecially if it has to do with you getting to know yourself better through whatever route you take whether meditation, our prayer, our whatever.......i think that is good..............and daydreaming about the future and goals are good too............

invisibleplanet
31st March 2003, 22:39
MUX - loved the trance-musik rant...

tranced-mind however is different thing altogether...
in a tranced state, your suspended between unconscious and conscious, between dreams and waking...
in a state of trance, you're susceptible to suggestion...
or open to everything that you're not
and in some ways, and some environments, this could be dangerous.

trance could be dangerous if u enter it whilst ur in the wrong environment

MUX
31st March 2003, 22:40
damn my posts seems off topic, i was thinking were talking bout trance music wise...
tanceing in this sense is normal to a non-frequent drug user... every happen to 'lose seconds' in dancefloors? i kinda stick in one second and continue around 2 secs after... very regualry but i blame acid (lsd) and stroboscopes ( both make ya blind :) )

MUX
31st March 2003, 22:58
and another thing.. on the trance state mentally:
this is gonna be hard for all you people to believe but down here is a very very catholic country.. and they have preachers making crippled people walk and blind people see .. they had cancer tumours disappear and so on... and it aint bullshit.. they all fall into a similar trance b4... it is generally tested medically afterwards and the doctors can only use the word 'miracle' to explain some of this stuff...
it's Faith.. and faith alone in my head. if you give a cancer riddled 80 year old a stone and tell them to wash thiers hands with it everyday not to die, and they are scared of dying... they would live

slighty off topic
i've once seen seen a church possesion with a patron saint ( the child madonna in this case ) once...it was raining by bucketloads all day... and these statues are full of gold, so the rain stopped a few seconds before she left the church doors, and restarted seconds after she re-entered ( 2 hours later )... explaination? where there's a will there's a way?

ps. im not a active catholic, i was baptisted as one and dont follow relligon nowadays

Museum of Kazakh National Musical Instruments
The Ykhlas museum collects kazakh musical instruments. The most ancient exhibits are referred to the end of the 17th century. One of them is military drum. This first musical accompaniment in the life of a person gave the rhythm of collision. Under the measured magic sound wizards predicted good luck or failure falling into the trance. Shaman's drum was connected with something bestial. And it symbolized association of a person with the nature. The main Spirit of Shaman's protection was the bestial Spirit. During the actions Bakhsy (shaman) Spirit (protector) penetrated into the shaman soul and led the whole ritual. The Second instrument is dombra. Only dombra, unlike drums, accompanies some sides of human life. Speaking dombra advises, sings and speculates, not hurrying in relatively calm rhythm. It sounds meditatively. Sometimes dombra gives a very clear rhythm, assonant tympanums. Later dombra went from shamanism more and more and gained aesthetic value. Many centuries ago somebody possessing fine musical hearing heard a nice music in a sounding bowstring. For a long time those sounds penetrated deeply into souls of people and as a result string instruments were invented.
