What other modern midi analogue synths are in the same kind of poshness/price range as these?

Prophet '08
Moog Voyager

Alesis Andromeda? Not as posh as them two though.

I can't think of Alesis without thinking of the noisiest effects ever :)

and the most horrible looking interfaces...

have you won the pools or something?

KuffDam

no. just the usual drooling. Mr Beckett may well be buying some posh synth soon though...

unless you get something old, I think those 3 are the only modern expensive analogues out there right now. The PolyEvolver Keyboard, I guess.

I'd go for the Prophet out of those 4, easily. Playing around on my mate's Prophet 5 gave me the facking horn. Even if it did go out of tune every 10 minutes. Prophet 08 won't go out of tune (although sadly doesn't have SSM chips as the old Prophet 5s do), but still sounds fantastic.

the Voyager is so fucking raw its silly.. but that much money for a monosynth is crazy.. still... it's one of those synths where it can be the whole track...

Loz

the Prophet is cheaper than the Moog, though. Is it really 2500 quids worth of good?

And it is 'just' another monosynth.

I'd easily take the Prophet in all its 8-voice glory over the Moog, even if the Moog is better at what it does, the Prophet is more versatile.

KuffDam

the rack is 1299

I don't think the prophet is more versatile, it's not the same thing

You reckon? I've only had 20 minutes play on a Voyager in Turnkey when I was down there once, and thought it was excellent for really mental leads and impossibly nasty basslines (and bits in between), but you can get those sounds (not as good) on the Prophet (5, at least), plus you've got chords, more modulation options, a little step sequencer, etc.

I never tried, but what's the Moog like for pads and strings? I'm assuming all the knobs receive and send midi, too.

monosynths aren't so good at pads and strings.

you have to weight up how things look in your studio picture too.

Loz

come on.. my mate Chris and I are prime examples.

great studio picture... crap or little music

You're the sharpest tack in the box.

Fuck analogue! If you can find one, this is about as posh as you can get.

to be honest, as far as digital is concerned, this is still the synth of my dreams

I had a play with an Andromeda in that keyboard shop in Brighton. God, the build quality is awful, especially for the money. Really flimsy and plastic feeling. The knobs all wobbled when you moved them, and felt really cheap.

Plus the interface looks as if a "Take Me To Your Dealer" Psy-Trance Loon has vomited silver and blur all over it.

Not impressed at all.

Yep, ive heard similar about the build quality. I think if i was to get one, id get a second hand one, and give it a good test before hand.

Somtimes buying second hand can be looked as somone else doing an extended burn-in / testing phase. If it still works at the end of it...

Ive heard variation between units too, which would support the above action even further.

I dont care what the interface looks like at all. Id rather a fluro pink interface that was a dream to use than a slick looking one that was crap. Obviously id like the best of both, but id put function first any day.

But, yep, i dont know enough about the alesis either really. If i could justify one in any way at all, id find out more, but i cant, so i havent ; )

Plus modern stuff with a reputation for unreliability (ie alesis) scares me. All custom surface mount stuff that i wouldnt have a hope in hell of fixing : /

at least you'd know the Moog and (most likely) the Prophet would be properly built, circuit-wise, allowing you to fix any problems yourself, so long as you know what you're doing.

julian

i know virtually nothing of either, but i certainly believe the P08 is stuffed full of custom ICs.

id just rather buy old kit where i can - then at least the achilles heels are well documented.

I'd forgot about the Macbeth.. looks lush... HUGE though.. definitely talking about non modular types in this thread though... synths for getting stuff done.

I'd prefer the Macbeth M3X to the moog voyager I think, supposed to sound better. Hard to find them, but would be half the price of a voyager. I notice they seem to be going up in price too now they're not made anymore.

The new Buchla 200 looks mad too. There's the Waldorf Wave too, digital synth but I'd love to have one.

What about this one (http://www.studioelectronics.com/products_omega8.php) too.
