I like it myself.
a lot of the music I have been listening to as of late has been coffee shopesque. I haven't been to a club in so long I don't really remember what music for the club is supposed to be.
for me it is all about the slow deep dub type sounds.
burial, murcof and deepchord.

when 2step was at its peak around 2002 there was a feeling of excitment about the music being made. there was no set sound, just fun & straightforward tunes. obviously being a predominantly black cultural form in this country it was crushed by any means possible ie: politics & media.
with dubstep i think there is an over-arching set of sounds & ideas as to what is & isnt dubstep, & that makes it boring to me. the fun has been removed & replaced by limits.
its not entirely awful, i just wouldnt listen to it

I feel the same. I have been playing dubstep for a long time and got a bit sick with what the kids these days are calling dubstep. A slew of halfstep wobble nonsense...Still, the backlash has started and there is still good stuff out there - it just takes a bit of digging to get to it...it was discussed here a week or so ago...Knid came good with the recommendations ;)

The thing about burial is that when South London Boroughs came out it was such a brilliant record. He's released loads of great music since, but most of it is quite similar to that record, and none of it is genuinely better.
Maybe it's like photek, a slew of amazing e.ps that completely define a sound and then no major improvement. Well, photek switched to producing shite, so mebe not that similar at all.
Listening to the new tracks, and again it's basically the same sound but the vocals are a really nice addition. He was saying himself in interviews that he wished the vocals would come back like the old 2-step.

Just listening to Mary Anne Hobbs' show and the Kode 9's megamix of the new album. It's rather good. She's nauseatingly gushing about it. She thinks it's the best thing she's ever heard but I wouldn't go that far. It is more 2step garage than dubstep though, which is not a bad thing by all means. I like!

Got the new album today, had one listen and first impression is total amazement. I really, really like it - probably the best thing I've heard all year, if not all of last year as well.
but that said, I'm not that massively into this dubstep sound, although this album sounds somewhat removed from the rest of the stuff currently coming out of the genre.
Great stuff, will definitely be putting it on repeat.
Thought it was an improvement over the first album. Listened to that yesterday and thought it got a bit samey.
V Knid esq
6th November 2007, 18:00
Took me a couple of listens to the full album but I'm 100% hooked. I was definitely a fan before but this is much, much deeper and more varied than the first album - even if it does repeat loads of sonic tricks... it's got full on song structures and brilliant ravey bits - in the same way that eg Aphex Ambient Works Vol 1, or Carl Craig At Les is 'ravey' i.e. sunrise bliss-out acid... yeah, I say believe the hype.
Having said that, there's nothing as rhythmically amazing as Broken Home on it...
The remix he's done for Bloc Party is shit hot too.

I listened to it twice today and I love it, didn't think I'd like the vocals from the Kode9 mix and the short clips I'd heard but in the context of the LP they really work. I read it described somewhere else as a bit like the cheesier elements of the Bladerunner soundtrack which sounds a bit harsh but I have the whole Vangelis score on the mp3 player as well and there's something in that with the dream-like dialogue and the synth echoes. Incidentally if you want to hear the bloc Party remix it's the 2nd track on this mix (http://thisisnotanexitclub.blogspot.c om/2007/10/i-got-up-sunday-morning-and-with-packet.html) and it does just sound like Burial.
