while not being overly fond of cover versions, there are some you just can`t argue with.
what cover version do you love and what cover version really get on your wick...or worse still , spoil your enjoyment of the original
i really love the cover that marilyn manson did of "tubeway army - down in the park"
completely different from the original...love it
but i cant stand what tom jones did to prince`s "kiss"
every time i hear the original now, all i hear in my head is awful tom jones screeching over the top... pity

I recently woke up to Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt (NIN)- It was pretty damn beautiful... Got really intense at parts... affected my morning.
The Sundays did a beautiful cover of Wild Horses (Rolling Stones).
Jacob Fairley covers Iggy and the Stooges - I Wanna be Your Dog... Started out as a subtle cover.. really slick (I freaked the hell out)- The last time I saw it performed his voice was much more abraisive- throaty... pure gold! I highly recommend this one!

That was the best. The ITV film on a Monday night with some quality dubbing. Robocop and Lethal Weapon provided such gems as

Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal, makes me laugh... possibly because of my house mate's reaction at the time - she was a big RnB fan and as far as she was concerned it was total heresy - as far as I was concerned the only thing I had a problem with was the lead singer of Alien Ant Farm so badly wants to be the new Henry Rollins and he's gonna have to try a lot lot lot harder...
A1s cover of A-ha's "Take On Me" was funny too - because it was actually a rehash of Morten Harket's 'techno' remix of his own track...
(ahem) Grobs reveals his disgraceful fetish for pop music and retires to a safe distance for the afternoon...

This Mortal Coil's cover of Tim Buckley's 'Song to the Siren' is my total fave - and probably on me best ever list too.
Other covers of note in my book are: KLF : K Cera Cera / The War is Over , and Earthing's cover of 'Because the Night', totally awesome...
I agree with the NIN stuff above too, they are cracking and a bit 'under rated' maybe, athough his moaning gets annoying occasionally, but the music is ace.

oh and now that I read emma's post
there's a lot of cool kraftwerk covers available, and two very covers of "the model" are
markus & kristian - hän malli on which was produced by one half of mr.velcro fastener and features the original with finnish vocals, and one a musically more serious tip, snakefinger of the residents did an awesome cover of the song as well - this is in fact the track that dj hell bootlegged for his clubvoices bootleg, only thing he added to snakefingers version was a electro loop and a crossfade sample...
there are like a ton more obscure kraftwerk covers floating around, for instance a friend of mine played me a lp of a russian ensemble that did russian folkmusic versions of most of their big hits.

I love cover versions of all kinds. I have quite a big collection of easy listening versions of Fool On The Hill by the Beatles, including some shit hot bossanova versions.
My current favourite is Dani Siciliano (Matthew Herbert's usual vocallist) doing a downtempo jazz / breaks cover of Nirvana's Come As You Are - it's on the Gilles Peterson mix CD that was on the front of last month's Muzik mag.
Mux - Yellow Submarine is on the Bad Meaning Good mix CD that Roots M did a few months back.
