I am a general lover of art and am open minded about a lot of art that may be described as not being art, but this shit is just stupid.

in fairness, though, conceptual art isn't really supposed to be about technical mastery and deft execution, is it?

why don't you? a piece of conceptual art critiquing another piece of conceptual art? that's so post-modern it'll make andy warhol come back from the dead and have a quiet wank next to a tree before going to the council to put his name on the housing register so he can spend the rest of eternity watching jeremy kyle in his underpants

Historically, what has been the purpose of art??
to tell a story, for worship, for visual beauty, to comemorate something,
to teach...etc...communication at a higher level...

I personally would have put a plastic orange in the center of the room and have a mutli colored spotlight on the fake fruit change color every 10 seconds. (controlled by a laptop of course).

Art to me is about skill. Not just anyone should be able to do what you do if you are a great artist.

Its the emperor has new clothes mentality. No one wants to say "I don't get it" at the party

I'm not so much on the "not anyone can do it" mentality w/ art..
but I do think it definitely has to have some form of expression/feeling/depth or even uniqueness in cleverness(whatever)...even shallow depth for that matter..but some kind of substance...
which is why my art is the simple - sign on the light switch, threating to kill anyone who fucks w/ it...

;)

I guess I said if you are a great artist. People can make pretty things and evoke feelings and be fairly good artists, but great artists that everyone remembers through time usually display a true gift. But we've all read art history books detailing the history of modern art. All the works, like the lights going off, in Art History books that seem simplistic usually set off movements in the art world and philosophies about art and are credited and remembered for the change they have made rather than for the appreciation of the pieces themselves. Maybe I'm being a master of the obvious

not necessarily... because sometimes an artist isn't remembered or even liked and then because of a change in style or the zeitgeist of the time an artist who was nothing can then be viewed as a particularly "great artist"...
but I do get your meaning...

yeah, anyone could turn a light switch on and off, but not everyone could give it a purpose

not that i know the rationale behind the light-switching, but i'm guessing there's one

the art of bullshit is the only art I see here - total rubbish.

conceptual or not, I think it needs a little more substance.

But I do agree it's got people talking, and I like his comments about how it's down to individual perception to find meaning, but I think he could have made more of an effort.

if you want 'substance', conceptual art is the wrong place to look for it. it's the original medium-is-the-message artform. totally anti-aesthetic

funnily enough, the anti-aestheticism thing came about as a reaction to more traditional forms of art, because it was felt that such artforms, where technical skill was key, were bourgeois and elitist. and much as i'm defending it here, i can't think of any artform more bourgeois and elitist than conceptual art

if it makes you all feel any better, i do feel like a fucking ponce

anyway, as knid touched on earlier - what is art? if any of you can actually, verbally define art for me, then you can tell me what is or isn't it. otherwise you all just sound like your grandma listening to autechre and going, "this isn't music"

People who say art is bullshit are right... it's just interesting how inventive, witty and strange people's bullshitting can get. It's also quite right that art annoys and challenges people - thats what it should do.
