You got to wonder what the fuck the Americans do with it all - I mean I know there's 250M of them - but fuck me... it must be the secret ingredient in McDonalds burger cheese or something.

well, I think we may have more cars per capita than most nations.
on top of that, transportation of goods via trucks cross country is huge and spans about 3000 miles coast to coast.
people tend to forget just how big this country is, especially for an industrialized nation.
also every car is the size of a small house and even the basic models have aircon, refrigerator, plasma tv and a surface to air missile launcher, thats why they now measure their petrol usage in gallons per mile.
isnt that right sheridan.

not far off the truth...
was there for 5 weeks last year and every time youre out on the street pretty much anywhere we went (we travelled coast to coast in a big U shape) youd hear big V8s and the like roaring down the road generally in the shape of large pick up trucks and massive SUVs

aye, not too far off.
even as the price of gas rises in the US people still buy suvs and large pick up trucks which get poor gas mileage. sometimes when I go to fill up my car I see the price of the previous car and I have seen some as high as $80 to fill up the tank.

that high eh? That's what it costs to fill the average car in the UK.
its not too far off that here either.
it would be interesting to see a table of petrol price correlated with average income.

I know.
that is why I get so pissed off when I hear people complain about the price in the states. we have some of the cheapest gas in the industrialized world, but most americans have blinders on and piss and moan about it anyway.

yeah but it is all relative I suppose. A 10% price increase is bad for everyone, everywhere... I guess especially so in the US where the options to car ownership are practically non-existent unless you live in a big city.
The quicker it runs out the better really.

I suppose the only positive thing is that we aren't as truly dependent on oil as people make out. America could cut it's usage by a massive amount without grinding to a halt, they just need to be more efficient in their use.

Do you think they/we/whatever will actually save enough oil to keep massive goods transportation going long after conventional use of oil has ceased.
Or do you reckon we'll all get our plasma tvs and cheap electronics delivered to us via nuclear powered cargo ships?
nah, teams of pigeons and huskies.

get a bike dave.. top tip..mate of mine bought a perfectly ok bike from ToysRUs for about £40 the other week.. serious :)
Traffic still terrifies me too.. I just go on the pavement if it's busy, or if i'm feeling nervous, or if there's a bunch of buses coming cos they go past you at 40mph and give you 30cm room. It saves me SHITLOADS of cash and I can get up half hour later than if i was getting the bus. Where u livin at the mo?

Some people reckon so. I've been there and never thought it was shit.. but not amazing either. It's good for the Teppanyaki thing.. juggling eggs n the like.
edit: and I just remembered... went there with the missus and they had a General Midi version of Robbie Williams Angels on a loop for the ENTIRE TIME WE WERE THERE. Probably why I have mixed feelings about it.
