no. I hate phones.
I like the rumours that the multi touch technology is being built into the trackpad of the new powerbook though.

i've got a multi-touch interface on my laptop. it's a sort of board, adorned with an array of 'keys' bearing letters, numbers and symbols. by stroking the keys with my fingers, i can 'type' words on the screen screen, open files and programs, copy and paste. i don't know how i ever managed without one

I was bored of it before it had even been invented. In fact, I'll be bored of every new thing Apple/Microsoft ever announce.

Have had a smartphone for over a month now - and it's great having all the apps - Office, 3G internet, touch screen etc etc.
But the UI on Windows Mobile fucking sucks big time - even a first year HCI student, one week into their first term could do a better job - its got so many elemetary mistakes.
Plus it crashes, plus it's got loads of bugs.
So it won't be hard to Apple to take a big bite out of that market if the iPhone is even half as good as they say it is.
That said, when it gets to Europe - if there's no 3G and the network they go with doesn't have a T-Mobile style web-n-walk deal then Jobs can stuff his iPhone up his arse.
Have noticed that the other networks are now advertising some sort of 'internet comes to mobile phone' think it's Vodafone - trying to make out their first to the market, when t-mobile have had web n walk for yonks.
yeah - windows mobile needs sorting.. its pretty shit. Useful to have outlook on it for work and things.. and internet, as you said.
Does anyone else use Windows Mobile with any web browser other than IE?

i've had my smartphone for a year and i want a normal phone again. I liked having computers in my phones before... but i can't stand having a computer that's got a phone tacked on as an afterthought. Especially running windoze. It's really crap.
My favourite bit of shit interface design is the "Alarm" settings... I used to miss things because I didn't set it properly. It has a thing where you set the time you want the alarm to go off.. but then you have to move to another field (using the SHIT joystick) and turn the alarm "ON". Presumably this is for all those people who like to set alarm times but not actually have the alarm go off... perhaps it gives them a chance to mull it over and maybe come back later and say "yes I DO want the alarm to go off"... or perhaps it's just a useful location in which they can store 4 digits and a colon.
its mega crap for left handers as well... when scrolling, with a pen/key/match stick/piece of crisp or whatever you use to replace your lost stylus, your hand just blocks the screen.

4 digits and a colon.
Add a tube of lube to that and you've just described Loz's perfect night in.

I didn't realise what you had was a windows 'smartphone' spandex. That was a shockingly terrible interface.

windows mobile is shit. I had a palm treo 650 for a while, which had the same 'computer that's also a phone' issue - figures, similar background as windows mobile.
nokie e-series phones are good smartphones though - they make a good phone interface anyway.
that being said, I am keen on the iphone, but like grobs, I'd want to see 3G before I'd go for it.

I've hardly seen any phones since they went colour screen.. and all the ones I have seen have been awful.
I had really boring Nokias before and they were always good cos they worked as a phone and you didn't have to fanny about trying to work out how to "Send" or "Search". Are they still good?
Tbh the n95 looked nice when a colleague briefly showed me his. The web browser looked easier.. even without having a pokey thing.
i liked my rubber destroy proof one from about 5 years ago... apparently they stopped making them so robust because they were lasting too long. Bad for profit.

I always buy the cheapest 'new' nokia I can get on Ebay, usually cost around £15 and last two years. I don't have a contract so I save a fortune.

heh i carried my 6310 for years, till the display just went dead. i have a samsung d830 now and it sucks. nokia still has the best software.
a collegue showed me mobile TV via gsm. it was a bit slow, but enough for watching the sport results or something.

i use Opera instead of IE. ithink its the de facto windoze substitute browser.
my phone before was also a Nokia 6310. the last decent phone ever. if you look carefully you can still buy them new. had mine about 5 years and i'm sure when this lump of junk fails i'll be using it again.
Spandex
2nd July 2007, 22:24
Yeah.. my last sane phone was a 6310.. only replaced it cos the power button broke. I can still turn it on using a safety pin and, tbh, that probably makes it more useful than this "Smart" phone. Plus the battery lasted about a week. I have to charge this one EVERY FUCKING DAY.
komakid
2nd July 2007, 22:26
yeah. the faszinating thing about the 6310 is that it still holds its second hand price of 250 eur i think.

i have a piece of cock o2 phone that i bought from tesco on impulse at about 11pm about 18 months ago. it's not like i use my mobile that much anyway (in fact, i resent the fucker), but next time i reckon i'll put a bit more thought into it
got an e65 that is quite cool..mon the wifi

ah.. that's wot i want.. a phone that JUST about browses the web but does it via wifi. all i ever want to do is look at the weather or cheat in the pub quiz.
thats pretty much the e65, I think it does have some apps on it, but its pretty much the same as the old nokia I had.
bugger paying mobile data charges

yeah I got the e65 as well - the e65i looks better though, the case is a bit slimmer and the whole device feels less plasticy and solid.
the browser on the e65 is really good, the keypad is good enough for emails and forums, and a number of email services are supported, including exchange.
and the battery can last 2-3 days if you're not on the phone all the time

ive got the n95. the screen and camera are amazing. Gps is rubbish. need to wait till tom tom works with the internal. The battery lasts a surprisingly long time too once you empty the charge a few times. The web browser is a bit fiddly, but ive never got wifi to work with it - not that ive spent any time trying though and probably ot do with my works authentication system. I think you can get opera as well. That said, i wouldnt have got it if i had to pay the full whack, i got a mega discount on my contract. All in all i like it, but i love feature bloat.

Does the wifi support wireless-G and WPA?
I don't think wireless-g but WPA is.
yer_maw it took me a while to get wireless working but I found its very easy to put the pw in wrong.
try it on an unencrypted network to confirm this. works right away.

The battery on the 6310 was legendary - that's why I got it - even after five years - I get a good five days out of it.
When new it last about 15 days (passive - not talk time).

A in-depth review...
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/07/02/apples_iphone_an_initial_but_i n_depth_review.html
A lot of it looks good. i just hope that the team are still hard at work on the European model because there are clearly design decision made on the US version based on the state of the US mobile phone technology that just don't apply in Europe.
The stuff about trying to push SMS and MMS out of the picture is particularly worrying. And as I said no 3G is a bit of a deal breaker in my book.

yer_maw - what makes the GPS rubbish? the software? I'm just wondering cause I've tried the external nokia bluetooth receiver and was less than impressed - took forever for the thing to get a signal...
Yer_Maw
3rd July 2007, 14:41
the internal gps is a star II chip, which is low power for battery reasons but takes ages to get a signal.
The software doesnt update your route if you have to take a detour, and you have to pay extra for voice commands. also the postcode search is rubbish and the screen doesnt rotate to face forward the way you are going. Tom tom is much better software but its not updated to use internal gps. Im not going to bother using it till then, but id reccomend getting an external star III buetooth gps if the latency was bothering you.
it is really handy if you get lost though, but i wouldnt use it in the car.

3rd July 2007, 16:10
yeah the latency was bugging me - but maybe mine was just particularly bad - I mean, it shouldn't take 15 minutes+ to get a signal from the sat, should it?

I saw an iphone on sunday for the first time.
I haven't been into all the hype for it, but I must say that I was really impressed. the guy who had it gave me a nice overview of what it can do and how it works. I must say, I want one now, but I am not willing to switch my cell provider and face penalties and pay the $400 for the phone itself.
maybe in a few years time.
