so I had been seeing this woman for the last year.
we had several break ups but would remain in contact.
recently we called things off for good but again, remained in contact.
we both want to remain friends and have been.
I just found out yesterday that she had cheated on me.
she is an alcoholic and is very prone to blackouts.
she blacked out once and slept with a co-worker. she didn't know it happened until yesterday. the affair happened back around christmas time.
I know that our romantic relationship is over, but I still care for her deeply and want to see her get healthy in regards to her drinking. she actually attended her first AA meeting last night before finding out about what happened. I want to be there and support her since she really doesn't have anyone else to help her, but I just don't know how I can do that.

get some books on alcoholism and co-dependence and learn about what you can and cannot be doing to 'help' her and then accept it...

sooner or later you'll find that there is nothing you can do except let her do what she needs to do to get better...

I dated a girl on a similar level to this mate, it was proper hard. She didn't really want help and constantly drank herself stupid. Dunno if she cheated on me...i don't think so, that part of the relationship was pretty alright.

In the end i walked...too much hassle and she didn't want to change evenn though we talked about it and made the effort to get her sorted.

At least your ex is taking the right steps in dealing with her issues. But its a hard decision maintaining contact, you have to be selfish i reckon sometimes in certain situations otherwise your head will end up all over the shop too.
