View Full Version : [Movie]Once Upon a Time in America
I watched this movie this weekend on a whim and was suprised to find a
hidden gem of a movie. The movie has some great actors(looking considerabley young - filmed released in 1984):Jennifer Connally, Joe Pesci, Danny Aiello,Burt Young, and also starring a very handsomely sexy Robert De Niro and too many more faces that I recognized but forgot their names.....
For those of you who like the GodFather, Goodfellas, The Untouchables, etc..this is a mobster classic IMO, atho not the traditional Italian mobsters.....

is this a hidden gem?
thought it was widely thought of as a classic gangster film
it's brilliant

yeah it's a good flick, but not the best imho, and yeah, as Loz said, it's hardly a hidden gem!
Jennifer Connelly = *droooool*
it was a hidden gem for me...
I'd never heard of it till i was going thru my recommendations on netflix this weekend and it has a 4-1/2 star rating and robert de niro *drooool*...
so I gave it a watch...
I love the cinemotography in the film!!..because you can see some elements of the old style of how movies were made, but then there was these shocking scenes that reminded you movies were taking a definite change towards very real scenes as opposed to idealised scenes...you see both imo in this movie...

Once Upon a Time in the West is even better, pretty much the only western I like.
the rape is in my top ten cinematic rapes
that rape scene totally fucked my head up...cause I really thought he was going to stop....and realized what he was doing!!...
and I couldn't understand why he would do that to someone he loved so much?!..but I also know that he was in jail for much of his childhood and young adult life that the response was true to the character...
even tho I wanted the hollywoodesque thing to happen and that something kept him from going thru w/ it...It's probably cause de niro was so handsome..and I wanted him to be sort of a good guy...
I'll chk out one of the westerns...but I'm not big on westerns either..

i dont like it. too long, and the rape is a bit dodgy.
once upon a time in the west is, at a push, my favorite film. the way the story reveals itself is amazing, totally amazing film.

This first part yea...it's a bit slow and I worried at first it was gonna be a long boring one...but I think it's a part of getting involved and understanding the characters and being able to identify w/ them when the shit happens..
I've got the movie ya'll have recommended in my netflix box...
funny enough the netflix recommendation system also recommended that one as well as Serpico...
Serpico is ACE!!...

what is the attraction with Bob de Niro. Great actor, only if you think doing a funny little grumpy face for every single possible scene and character to be good actor.
and no I donzt think al pacino is better but at least he has a bigger range of facial expressions

I don't know...but in this movie...he's pretty good looking....and his acting skills cannot be questioned...he ranges from being innocent, savy, to brutal and vicious, to sensative and caring even...and you see it in his face and demeanor in the movie...and you feel it too...
al pacino in his youth was a looker too...
and I think they are both great actors..but lately it's true that they have constantly been playing the same roles...al pacino either a cop type or an ex-military type who's screaming and yelping in some courtroom or another..
and then Robert de Niro is that same grumpy old guy face....
-but my comments for de Niro being sexy is just for this movie...I've never really seen a movie where he's so young before...

Sergio Leone is the master of your reality, and ruler of our universe. Team him up with Ennio Morricone and the prepare for total ovular ownage.

thats a bit rough said honestly. they are both great masters of the acting arts. as far as im into it, they spent both much time with training cehovs method of acting, which is based on going into a emotion by imaging things or emotions. a method which can make you hyperreacting or overfeeling a certain emotion. i think thats where the big grin face comes from. look a bit better on their acting and youll see what im talknig about, its not just the grimmy faces, its more. thats why they are both so huge actors. they can control those feelings and reactions perfectly.

the rape is in my top ten cinematic rapes
whats your number one film rape then?
i would say either irreversible for sheer brutality, or the potting shed scene in scum for the "you shouldnt really laugh but...." factor
