hmmm a $1000 for a piece of equipment that
is really only worth about $250 - $300. is it worth it?

maybe not 1000$ worth, but an excellent machine anyway.
I have a special modification from the jomox guys: extra weird tuning for BD, HH & claps. won't live without that machine =)

To me 909 has alot more depth than a DMX without a prommer.
And it's got a familiar sound which can save you alot of time at first. But its big weakness is that it is so familiar and you can't change patterns while recording. This makes complicated programming best done over midi. At which point a software sampler is looking good.

The DMX is great if you want to jump on the new wave revival bandwagon (Its got that blue monday sound) but outside of that its just the first major sample based drum machine, its a limited, rare, and strange sounding historical oddity. It doesn't have as deep an interface as the 909. You've got voice volume on the outside and inside the case tuning that's it. The midi'd DMX's are even more rare. The batteries are also often an issue.

A machine drum (www.machinedrum.com) is what someone should get if they want a physical drum machine at this point. It does everything you'd want a drum machine to do with a much better interface than the classics (i.e. you never have to stop the machine not ever!). It's very deep and flexible with 5+ algorithms for most sounds. You can automate tweaks ,etc.

Price is of course a separate issue. If you are sensitive to price the software world is probably a better place to be.

mmh the MachineDrum must be very very cool, but its fucking expensive. It´s nearly 1400 €!
Instead of a 909 I would buy the AirBase 99 by Jomox when you´re do not need a sequencer. Because you´ve got some of more posiibilities with the LFO and the different sampling formats like 808, 909, CR78 and that by Jomox
