View Full Version : Techno metal

I've just been listening to a couple of really good bands that incorporate jungle and thrash/death metal - http://www.myspace.com/tedmaul666 and http://www.myspace.com/walkoff - plus there's that Enter Shikari band been in the charts who like, er, screamo and trance.
Anyway it got me thinking about metal/rock + techno/d&b crossovers... lots of people tried it but it never seemed to end up sounding like metal - just dance with metal samples on the whole... or else just like industrial.
Examples I can think of
KLF - What Time Is Love Techno Gate Mix (I know it's Hendrix, but it sounds like metal guitars) / What Time Is Love America
Alec Empire - Intelligence & Sacrifice album
Apollo 440 - Stop The Rock
Hoodlum Priest - Capital Of Pain
there's a d&b track, think it's Andy C, on one of those Ram mix CDs with thrash riffs and screaming
etc... anyone name any others that have actually worked? I don't really know much about Tool, they're sposed to fuse electronics and metal, right? I'm just looking for more stuff that actually manages to be both metal AND dance rather than one with elements of the other tacked on.

I used to be really into Pitchshifter. Their early stuff was industrial, all guitars, shouting and drum machines, but as they got older, they combined techno and drum n bass into their sound, along with punk. I'd recommend checking out W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G., Please Sir, Genius, Un-united Kingdom.
They also did a brilliant cover of Kerosene by Big Black.

You are thinking of Nightbreed who had a track out on Ram Records called 'Pack of Wolves'.....bloody awful.
Andy C also made a track called 'Screamer' which samples Led Zeppelin if i'm not mistaken..

Actually, Ed Rush & Optical now have a live band which is kind of a dnb/metal crossover. Sorta like a dnb supergroup with Ed Rush, Optical, Matrix and RymeTyme...

Haha I can out-dork you here - it actually sampled the vocals from Goldbug's cover of 'Whole Lotta Love'.
I suppose Ministry came close... but again they're industrial more than techno.

Here's the Ted Maul demo - as it's a demo I reckon it's ok to share...

Track 2 is the closest I think I've heard to real breakbeat metal - though their drummer doesn't play at all on that one. The whole thing's got a technoheads' sense of production tho - listen to the way the singer's voice comes in on Track 3.

I think they both ended up with severe tinnitus after recording Wormhole.
Know what you mean knid - I really rated them but they have done nothing good for years....Optical was meant to be producing for a ska band called 'The Worms' which sounded promising but I could never actually find any more info about it (other than what i read in a copy of Knowledge magazine)..

i don't mind a bit of metal. but the vocals tend to bug me after a while. why don't these bands save a bit of cash and get an old tramp/alkie mic'ed up instead?
or even a bit of young girl vocals, like annie for example.
just my 2p worth.:)

I heard a lot of them use triggered samples now but I know what you mean.
I tried and failed numerous times to record a kind of drone metal idea I had.
But I could never get it to sound the way I imagined it. I've given up for a while. . I'll try again and maybe someday :) Anyone know a good metal producer?

generally metal and 'dance' is shit. the first pitchshifter record is great because its got some good grind but after that they went shit. im yet to hear any combination metal and electronics that i think is really good, well anything past using a drum machine..and as far as that goes you just want mortician.
they use a drum machine

tool use electronics for more ambience and added layers.
they don't fuse styles of dance music with their music.

ted maul are quite good, their metal stuff is really good, the electronics is a bit weak..bad sounds..bad production (from the myspace stuff)
they remind me of cephalic carnage, not quite so fucked up..but similar vibe.
you should check em out joe. 'exploiting dysfunction' is great.
anyway, you know the best death-metal dance tune is on my spy 12" ;)
