Hi
I'm facing another important decision: I need new monitors for my studio setup; currently, I'm using my stereo speakers.....

I've narrowed down my choice to the price range of around 700 Euro per speaker (active ones!), the Genelec 1030 and A.D.A.M P11 sound particularly good.....
so my question: Do any of you use one of these and are you satisfied with them? Or can you recommend other monitors?
Do you think one ought to look in that price range? I feel there simply isn't too much quality below this.

Any help appreciated. Also, I'm looking for a master keyboard... if you've got any tips (ought to have knobs for filters etc too), let me know.....

i was looking for monitor advice recently as well but i gave it up for now for money reasons. according to a test in "keyboards" 2001 there's crap and there's good in any price range. they even found out the more expensive models from the same brand can be worse. that's what they say.

keyboard with knobs - midiman oxygene ? only 2 octaves but also cheap and easy to carry.

for what its worth, i like my genelecs (1029s) but i don't really have experience with anything else...you wouldn't believe the sound that comes out of those tiny boxes when you crank them up though...you get a little bit of port breathing noise but its not bad

What makes these dynaudio so special in your view? have you compared them to genelecs, for example? would be interesting to know.... I'll definitely try them....
The small genelec 1029s sound amazingly huge, I've tried them as well. but I'll go for the bigger ones.

i use 2 setups. Spirit Absolute2 with DPA Renaissance amp in my small room and JBL 4410A with Struss Q amp (this amp was specialy made for those monitors) in my bigger room. I highly recommended JBL with Q - this setup sounds SUPERB!! I know this guy who made this amp (he's from Poland), he's crazy about clear, dynamic sound, He wasn't able to find suitable amp so he made Q (it has 130dB dynamic range). Here's his web site Struss (http://www.struss.com.pl/struss.html)

Will o the Wisp, do you have a professional recording studio? Mine ist relatively small (basically a computer......:-((( ) but I'll look at those Struss anyway. .. unfortunately, I don't spead Polish..... are they very expensive?? I'm going for the 700 Euro per box range.....

i´m using the dynaudios and have tested them for quite a long time + compared them with speakers in different price-ranges...like tannoy/genelec/adam/mackie/roland...i think the dynaudios sound less "aggressive" and more "naturally" plus picture both low/hi end very "precise" without being totally alien-studio-soudish...what means usually what sounds good on them will be ok for most other speakers and places...used before the tannoy and whenever stuff sounded good there it was totally crap anywhere else...

they are ok for normal bedrooms and else and i didn´t set up some special damping whatever stuff...my impression of genelec speakers was that they give you somewhat more presence and fatness maybe...what turned out to be quite tireing for me after some time...still it´s just my impression and also they might work only for deep-house-vocal-rock and goa-trance...i mean thats the music i produce on them :)*

...and sometimes some ragtime!
cheers!

i think JBL + Q is out of your reach, Struss Q costs around 1000 Euro...

there was already the same discussion on the old board. I think it's quite hard to recommend something, because the "perfect" setup might depend on too many factors - your room, the amp, mixing desk and your ears, of course =)

I use 2 pairs of the passive tannoy reveals and a yamaha amp and I'm very satisfied. but that's only my personal taste. however, if I hear one of my tracks at dubplates & mastering, it always sounds good and the guys don't have to change that much.

important: after you bought your new monitors, you should check each track on various speakers, headphones, etc. also compare your tracks with other records. (better: cd's - because vinyl always sounds different). if you feel that the results aren't ok, bring the monitors back to your retailer. I suggest to hear some monitors at a local music equipment dealer. if you found your favourite, ask them if you can bring them back if you're not satisfied. if not, order them online. german right says, that you can cancel an online order within 2 weeks without any special reasons.

also check the following link: http://www.netzmarkt.de/thomann/mspecial22-1.html

good luck!

agree on that mr_chombee! might have been my amp who made the tannoy sound crap? still think aktive is cool!

might also have been the room and the place / direction where the monitors were mounted(?). luckily my studio room was already full of these wall sound optimizers when I moved into it. that helps a lot. if I put the tannoys elsewhere, it sounds much different...especially the bass frequencies...

Monitor placement is another scary thing..... I just don't KNOW how it's done, but I guess the listener and the monitors must form an equilateral trangle.......
that is the main bit. I don't have an acoustically optimised room so that's about it...

My stereo recording-teacher has recommended me the Event 20/20 BAS (Bi-amplified system I think) before the Genelec 1030, since the 1030:s don't reach as well down into the bass frequencies.

good to see you here again FORMAT. i saw one of your tracks discussed in "Keys" a while ago. cool!

why not get some good ones second-hand instead of buying new? if you have a chance of testing them properly thats a good way imo.
i got me some Visonik ones that i'm really happy with from a mate for 250€ - bargain! if i ever should have the money i'd get me some Dynaudios though. some friends have some and i was well impressed - as someone mentioned before they sound very clear and analytical. it feels a bit cold when you hear them for the first time but once you get used to that you won't want to miss 'em anymore.
