All this Sci-Fi talk has spurred me on to make a movies thread (apologies if this has been done before). I am often lost for new films to get hold of so if anyone fancies listing their faves then it would be appreciated as I am sure you all have impeccable taste.
Heres some of mine - in no particular order

Repo Man

All Cronenberg
Solaris
3 Colours
Silent Running

Until the End of the World
Picnic at hanging rock

Has anyone ever seen Serge Gainsbourg's Je t'aime..moi non plus? This is the film he did based on the song of the same name. This is one of my favourite films. I have a feeling the film has still not been approved by the british film association due to the various sex and violence scenes. I've never seen it for sale here but I managed to get hold of a dodgy illegal copy. Soundtrack is by Gainsbourg too and is really beautiful.
If you see this film then you'll find out that Je t'aime the love song is actually about anal sex...

Besides the obvious favourites: lynch, cronenberg, I'd like to mention all kubrick films as far as I know: dr. strangelove, 2001, CLOCKWORK ORANGE (!!!), barry lyndon (way underrated), shining, full metal jacket...didn't like eyes wide shut that much, though.

I'd also add Jim Jarmush, especially down by law and stranger than paradise, but all his films are pretty good. Another one: Aki Kaurismääki. I also used to love the movies of Federico Fellini (although they never get shown on TV these days) and Peter Greenaway.

other good films:
french connection
man bites dog
lawrence of arabia
missing (Costa gavras in general)
ekel (early Roman Polanski)
der totmacher

where are the Herzog films??
Aguirre
Fitzcarraldo
Nosferatu

saw Kaspar Hauser a few weeks ago. someone told me that Bruno S (the lead actor) was taken from an asylum just to make this film. he's downright animalistic in this.

hmpf i disagree - just watched it a few weeks ago for the first time in my life - perhaps i should've seen it when it came out and i was young, but now it simply got on my nerves. i stopped at 3/4 and wasn't curious at all to see the rest. for me it was 'too much', too much meaning, too much darkness, too exaggerated... ok, the overall styling is impressive, but as i got used to it, it never changed, and the story really didn't make me want to know more.

hmm i think we had film threads before, my favourites remain "apocalypse now" and "starship troopers". i also recently enjoyed "neun pforten/nine...hmm gates or so", but it didn't go as deep as my favourites, and the ending was crap. same with "mulholland drive" - great styling but meaning...umm? also good: usual suspects like blade runner, alien 1+2, psycho & more hitchcock, the fog, IT (?), the eagle has landed & miami vice. i forgot most for sure.

Super Troopers is one of the best films I've seen in quite some time, it just catches the whole stoner idiologiy incredibly well but applies it to police officers so instead of being comedy gold it becomes comedy plutonium.

hmpf i disagree
Dune is an utterly fantastic film, it's just such a shame it goes for style rather than following hte book as there are many issues with it. yes it does push the boundaries a bit but it's done so nicely, the heart plugs were just a completely evil inception, the weirding modules provided nice plot drive despite being heresay to the books and over all the worms were played up just slightly with the whole religious tones of his transformation.

At least it was better than the sci-fi channel series/pilot thing. That was truely awful at every moment *apart* from the scenes which were completely made up independant of the book which were nicely done if not exactly in keeping with the cannon of the book.

c s

of course i didn't know the book either, but i wonder if the author didn't want a bit too much with his book, too. i'm always sceptical if someone tries to "go classical", as it seemed to me. an epic story is ok, but i reminded me too much of theatre plays. and most of all i guess i missed humour. it's dead serious, too heavy for me. even 'heavy stories' have to have funny scenes, some (self)irony...

also i add: robocop, event horizon.

concerning dune - I'm reading a book about Lynch right now, and he makes no secret of considering Dune basically having been a "disaster" in his own eyes... he felt that he was not left the freedom he deserved while making the film, and the studio execs made him add/change scenes to make the whole storyline more clear...

hey that's weird. you guys dig bud spencer / terrance hill as well. i just bought a pack of films cos they were rather cheap and i couldn't resist. i love these guys. all these 'Hackfressen' that get beaten up are so well casted and the synchronization rocks as well.

o-ton bud: "Kopfschmerzen krieg ich nur nach ner richtigen Schlägerei." lol

i wonder if they are known outside germany/itali? weren't these films mostly made for german market only?
