A settlement of differences in which each side makes concessions.

so does each person has to sacrifice something in order for there to be compromise?

phil

yes. so by not compromising your making no concessions.

and in making this compromise, do both parties gain?

phil

both parties gain.

Usualy I'll either stick to my guns or I'll compramise very early on i the understanding it's one of those arguemnts we'll never resolve so we're as well movig on by mutual agreement.

all this reminds me of lessons in game-theory. interesting but way too much math fo my likes.

didn't someone (c s?) post an article recently about germans being the world-champions of compromising?

ok
another attempt at a formula

(me-s)+(you-s)=x/(me+you)
where s is concession/sacrifice,
x is the gain to be shared by both of us.

i don't think i understand compromise at all :(

Everyone compromises I think, but to varying degrees depending on situation. I compromise less, now that I'm single, than when I was in a relationship. However I'll still compromise sometimes for my friends and family etc. I think the problem is whan people compromise unwillingly and build up bitterness and resentments. You shouldn't compromise if you think you'll have regrets. I compromise, but acknowledge that I'm doing it of my own free will to satisfy someone elses needs over my own, then I'm not bothered about compromising. Actually it makes you feel quite good about yourself sometimes.
