by installing the new one as a slave and dumping the files on to it.

the best way would be, to install the new drive, are you wanting the new drive to be the one you boot from? if so then put it in, you'll have to re-install what ever operating system you are running, when that is sorted the other drive will be the slave (you might need to change jumpers on back of hard drives depending).
or just have two drives in the machine, unless you really don't want the other drive.
does any of this make sense?

ok - is the old one still installeD? are you mac or pc?
if you is pc, then just bung the old one in the machine. you then will probably have to set the old one up as a slave, as you don't want this to boot from.
once installed the machine should recognise you have to hardrives, then you can just copy files from the old to the new.

install your old as a slave. (secondary disk) using the jumpers which look like this: http://www4.tomshardware.com/howto/20020904/images/jumper.jpg
A jumper is nothing more than a metal bridge that connects two contacts. We don't see the metal, though, because it's covered with plastic. Jumpers are often used to configure the PC. For instance, you can use them to set the processor speed or change a drive from a "master" to a "slave." Pictured above is a classic jumper, as used on drives and boards just about everywhere.

there is a diagram on this which shows u the connections

WORD
btw, driveimage is quite a slick way to transfer stuff from an old hd to a new one, and as a rule of thumb, it's generally a good idea to install the new disc as the main system disc because
a) it's likely to last longer
b) it's likely to be noticeably faster

yes, that's me - I've also made computer cases out of a beck's beer case and a pizza box, other mad concepts that came to mind were integrating my machine straight into a drawer of my desk, but I decided against that...

hehe - I like some of the madder overclocking projects documented in the www as well - like this character that submerged his motherboard & addon cards into machine oil, which got pumped through an old air conditioning unit.... I shit you not

ah well I cut a hole in the bottom and put the power supply there, much nicer for easy access to the guts inside....
