yesterday i was all cuddled in my small cold bed, just finished off my last funny fag before i end the day. flipping channels. and ka-pow! i see some monkies on the screen. It's was 2001 - A Space Odyssey.
i am a big kubrick fan.. but this one is a bit touchy.. i never really got the whole point, but it generally comes to me bit by bit.
but this time for me it was a challenge, for the film was in itilian, which i kinda understand except for a long word here or there.
but the film has the certain feel, this certain movement that i never ever came across. everything happens so slowly, it like a poem being read almost, phrase by phrase.
the music is brilliantly executed especially in the monkey part.
it had product placements by Hilton. & Howard Johnson.. sweet.
and HAL 9000: comforting & scares the shit out of you at the same time.
he's gradual breakdown is visable, and eats yr tension bit by bit.
when viewing the film for what is really was, its nothing but impressive and this was 1968. the year before man landed on the moon.
make your childrean watch this.
it's Kubrick at his best.
he's nothing but a legend.

i'm in agreement, MUX
this film is in my all time top ten.

MUX you are really lucky to see such films on television. i can choose between Volksmusik and Actionknaller.:illin:
and i agree, this one always leaves me a bit disordered too. a few very big questions are touched but Kubrik doesn't dare to give you any answers. the viewer has to find out himself whats the deal about them (like in that do-it-yourself hobby shows).
i get thrown out by the last sequence ever again, where he sees himself as an old man. i always think i'm on a good way puzzling it all together until then, havn't found a good sense for this bit yet.
must take more drugs!:!

have you seen missing in action II a couple of days ago, classic... lol
there is going to be a kubrick night on arte-tv pretty soon...so all the germans and french people keep an eye open!
But why does that monolithic slab fall between those monkeys?
is it like to represent man 's needs for religon?
invisibleplanet
7th March 2003, 15:39
perhaps the monolith represents craft and engineering, attempts to measure time and the seasons?
mr franks
7th March 2003, 15:44
- i reckon the monolith signifies the unknown, it also is the cause (perhaps) of the monkeys using bones as a weapon and generally becoming violent. It was the aliens visiting the dawn of man - maybe......i also like the shining, wicked film. I have not seen eyes wide shut, tom cruise puts me off.

One of my faves too G. Love the stoners in charge of a planet buster.
it could also be there to represent a new era i.e. vege monkey learning to hunt, fight and make wars and changes his diet to meat..

2001 is truly a masterpiece. a shame what they did with 2010.
i remember a documentary about kubrick. he wanted to film death in venecia and run out of funds. instead of a lot actors he used those puppets that are used to present clothing in stores. there are a lot unfinished projects by him.
deccard

i think the monolith represents existence. it just exists. doesn´t reflect the sun like it´s not there but it is.
maybe it is the idea of god.

i reckon thats the one. i like it when the bone is thrown in the air and it cuts to the space station/ship - love it. the monolith is there at the beginning and at the end, when he is old. crazy symbolism.
decadnids - i love that dark star film, and john carpenters electro / country and western soundtrack is the best. i had that on video and lent it to someone...........

decadnids
7th March 2003, 16:02
nah, you didnt. I wish you had, as I want to see it again!.
I watched it at your old place in rugby road.
kubrick licked to give unanswered questions to the viewer.
in eyes wide shut, every viewer can have their own opinion as well.

another great Carpenter film is = "They Live" it stars some american wrestler who finds special sunglasses that allow him to see the aliens that have intergrated themselves into society. wicked b movies style film!

most of carpenters stuff is wicked.
prince of darkness is a fine one, with alice cooper as some weird zombie (only a small role, more like a cameo than anything else).
yes it's very very good. see it alone, cause it leaves a better & bitter effect
deccard
7th March 2003, 16:10
eyes wide shut wasn´t that good(but i enjoyed it). nice filmed, cruise and kidman were better than i expected but i expected more from kubrick for that one. he should have finished A.I.
mr franks
7th March 2003, 16:10
AI smelled too much of speilburg.

ive not seen that one, sounds good. I watched spiderman the other day, passed me by a bit. which is sad as i could smell the money from outside the video shop.
deccard
7th March 2003, 16:14
yeah. speilburg stinks and voodoo sucks.
yes yes A.I. is a waste of kubricks good name i agree on that one.
but eyes wide shut does have it's great moments. it flaws here and there true, but this man was on his dying bed when making it!
perv part aside...
that orgy scene is so well choreographed with male members wearing black cloaks & masks and females nothing high heels, black thongs, and masks
but it does flaw in some corners, true about that
mr franks

i will definitly check it out at sometime tho - i should really, it was his last one....but tom fucking cruise!

just downloaded solaris this week and tried to watch it yesterday but got so bored in that love scene (smile, smile, flying kisses, everything pink..."damnit i got it. no go on with the story!!") that i had to stop and make some music.
i´ll give it another try tonite.

Check out the 'real' original Tarkovsky Solaris - It's kind of similar to 2001 (like its about the unknown and responses to it and its based on a book).
It's a totally awesome movie - if you like that kind of thing then I recommend 'Silent Running' as well - it's top class. (this has made me think of another classic sci-fi which was butchered in remake form - Rollerball, why remake genius?)
oh.. what about remaking planet of the apes?
remaking is touchy but works in some areas
Imagine someone remaking 'the usual susects' in year 2137.. ouch
deccard
7th March 2003, 21:03
i must say in most cases the remake didn´t work. i really have to dig in my mind for a good remake.
hollywoodremakes:
nikita - crap
3 men and a baby - crap
planet of the apes - crap
solaris - dunno yet the original but i bet: crap
the ring/ringu - dunno the hollywoodversion but i bet: crap
see all crap
:)
btw just read that starsky and hutch will be put on big screen....may the mullet be with you
well, i liked the remake of ocean's 11
jukka
7th March 2003, 21:16
well i haven't seen the original from the ring_____but the remake was okay.....nothing special and i wouldn't recommend but okay for watching once

I disagree on that one, but then I like tim burton. however, there are more crappy remakes that come to mind, in particular I consider emmerich's version of godzilla a kick in the groin.
even more scary are the rumors that there will be a-team movie WITHOUT mr.t and dwight schulz - I think that'd be enough to make me militant.
jukka
7th March 2003, 21:25
aaahhhhh.......godzilla remake was sooo bad, godzilla totally looked like a tyrannosaurus rex crap fatal !!!!.......i really love the old ones.
does anyone wanna trade some divx?
im really looking for :
Pi, Gummo, Kids, Julian Donkeyboy, Amalie, Battle Royale, Spinal Tap, Bowling for Columbine & most of all Woodstock Documentary..
a couple of cd-r in the post wouldnt hurt.
i can Burn on my Dvd-r so that would hold a good 4 or 5 divx
( my xbox plays them perfectly.. god bless Mcrsft )

planet of the apes was crap. just another hollywood action movie. nothing of the special mood the original built up. it wasn´t as bad as godzilla but still...crap.
oceans eleven was amusing to watch but.... get stoned, watch it, forget it. crap. :)

8th March 2003, 06:35
well deccard for one I thought that burton had some nice touches in there, like some ape saying "get your filthy hands off me human" to mark wahlberg toward the start, charlton heston as the dying old ape, etc...
I mean, this is not the most awesome movie ever, but I don't think it deserves to be called crap.

yes, I thought the movie was quite ok - not any cineastic highlight, but I rather enjoyed all those small little references to the old ones, etc...

i saw the Tarkovsky original of Solaris years ago, and i bet the George Cloony remake is rubbish too

don´t me wrong. i love stanley kubrick´s work.
but 2001 should be in fastforward... it´s very nice picture´s/scene etc, but i´ve had to see it 4-5time coz i kept falling aslepp.
still my personal favourite is Full mental jacket.

re-eyes wide shut: i'd recommend watching it. i'ts a grower. i took about four sessions of watching it until i really got it. now it's one of my faves.
re-solaris: havn't seen the new version yet but i think i will. surely can't touch with tarkovskys film and the book but it's another view which could be interesting.
btw there's a dvd-label that released the old version as highquality-package with loads of bonus stuff. check out the collection for 'solaris' at criterion (http://www.criterionco.com/asp/).
they got a shitload of other good ones there too. some for the kung-foo heads also. damn i need more money!

The Ring original is great - Ring 2 is OK too - but I would avoid Ring 0, pretty much total cash in bandwagon nonscence.
amble: cheers for that Solaris DVD tip off - I already have it but I am a bit of a fan so I might have to invest.
Also combining remakes and John Carpenter gets you his awesome remix (ish) of The Thing - full on artic craziness with an ace soundtrack too.
