I'm not familiar with either term, so if u'd care to define attributes, i'll probably have some kind of viewpoint for u.
i have a question for u whilst ur formulating your answer: is it really wise to categorise?
If it's not wise to categorise, then why do they do it in HMV,menzies etc??? It makes it easier for people to know where things are. i.e. i don't want to be looking around for hours, if there is a section called IDM. which would make my life easier. Besides Rephlex say to "file under braindance" on the back of albums such as Super user etc.. so are they wrong??!?
Well:
I.D.M is Intelligent dance music, for example Tom Jenkisons music is intelligent.
Braindance is not IDM, I think it means your brain dances as apposed to your body.
@IP Can you recommend some IDM at all. I always like to stumble on to something.

.."Braindance" its just a rephlex marketing thing, its no more than branding....a lot of the stuff should be filed under "emporers new clothes"..... I dont think I own a record I would describe as "IDM" Im not that keen on labeling music, Ill play Noodles, A-Squared, Sir Real, Micheal Forshaw and the Normal in one set so I dont think Im too concerned about categories...I like music DJs and producers that have got a sense of humour..

a fire that burns like that can never be right
all music is the product of intelligence
what does IDM mean to you, mindstein?

I can not give you the answers, you have to work through it yourself.
Well IDM is music that combines technical excellence with creative brilliance the fusion. For example Squarepushers track
"Do you know Squarepusher?"

IDM was a term created by the big wigs of the music industry to sell more music to middle class america white kids. electronica is the same, fuck it all - its arse wank.
electronic musick is a term that has been used since the 50 and 60's and should remain.

"Well IDM is music that combines technical excellence with creative brilliance the fusion. "
sounds like an entirely subjective experience to me.
just about any music could be given this attribute.
I only like the inteligent strain of electronic music though. There is a lot of electronic music i don't like. I like to think the music I like reflects me as a person.

as I said b4, the experience is subjective
music can mirror your mindset, or change it.
it's a powerful medium

but the majority of music that is placed into the box of IDM, is not intelligent, it is just poor examples of people making soul-less musick.
people who try to be clever never normally achieve anything other than being soul-less fuckers!

Soul - when musick as soul it generally gets you, it hooks you and it spits you out, it makes you weep and laugh with joy, it twists every emotional state you know, and others you don't know.
clever programming is like a rock guitarists doing a fancy solo, you might as well go to the toilet and have a wank, as the process is the same ;}
But there is no scientfic evidence of a "soul" Im sorry, I think you mean it makes u feel happy.

by soul, I do not mean the spiritualists view of a soul, as in the seperation of the body and the spirit, I mean SOUL as in making you not always happy, but the ability for some form of art to push the right buttons.

I'm not a big fan of IDM, but it seems unfair to judge the music on the pretentiousness of the producer (ha ha)...
What I'm trying to say is there 'some' good IDM tunes, but I can't stand the intellectual elitist bullshit that gets tagged onto usually by the people who make it, in an attempt to distance themselves from that other dance music - the one where people take drugs and get all silly...
Having no labels would be cool, but it wouldn't work as music isn't a language to most people, they need it broken down and described in their spoken language...

the thing is people don't often decide that their musick is IDM or what ever, it gets labeled that, and that is shite. because as soon as the label sticks you get lumbered with "oh you're so and so, and you do such and such kind of musick".
there are loads of bands I like that have been called idm now, but before they were just techno, or just electronic musick.
I am not judging the musick, I am judging the state of mind of the people that insist on using such pretentious terms as IDM and electronica.
Imagine if fire extinguishers had no labels???
Think about it.

yeah again an issue on semantics here, although the word is the same the meaning is different.

its hard for me to easily describe to people who dont know what we do or anyhting about this music and so i use the term electronic music or electronica . im not pretentious at all, far from it. a lot of language is inadequate. if you need to use shorthand, such terms can be useful. calling all music just music doesnt work, techno is way too limited...
thank you Emma, that was very well put. You need labels and music that is intelligent like Super Collider should be filed under Braindance or IDM. This is music written by clever people, who are good at Wigganometry.

4th March 2003, 13:30
fair point emma, I realise that you need to describe music to people. I have nothing against the term electronic music at all, I use it all the time, I hate the term electronica as the term try's to add some air of mysticism to something that in general has no mysteries. IDM is just plain pretentious, as was Intelligent Drum and Bass.
No Intelligent drum and bass is made by squarepusher.

..techno is way too limited by self-appointed 'techno' purists who would use the 'pin-down' method on what is essentially a progressive genre...

I guess my main grief is with the two terms IDM and electronica - I can handle techno, I can handle house, I just can't handle the IDM and electronica thing, I guess it is something I have to get over ;}
