Im after some suggestions, as im not so good with graphical stuff...

Im making up some pannels for some musical equipmeny - Previously ive used engraving onto anodised aluminium, but im experimenting with printed graphics transfered onto painted pannels.

Printing opens up possibliities with fonts (that have been excluded when engraving)

http://port23.co.uk/engraving.jpg

....and plus, noone else likes the script-c font ive been using.

So, yeah, anyway..

Can anyone recommend me a nice font? Im looking for somthing with some novelty, but still functional. Or, failing that, where do you go when youre looking for such things?

Thanks,

Julian

With all due respect, that font used above is bloody awful mate. Think youd be better off cellotaping a berol finetip to the paw of a squirrell and breathing 2 hits of dmt into its wee mouth.

phil's right in my opinion

stick typography or typeface into google and have a look round the proper font houses - you can find stuff on p2p networks if the prices are to high... free fonts, as with a lot of stuff, are mostly arse. Try to avoid going 'novelty', it can often mean 'unreadable'. The smaller the font - the less fussiness.

Try and find Helvetica Neue instead of Arial... its almost the same but better a lot neater and better proportioned - if you can get the whole family you'll get a lot of versatility

You'd fit right in at my place of work, even our toilet door signs are in Helvetica Neue.

dafont.com is quite a good free site to have a browse through, free font sites do tend to have a lot of 'novelty' fonts, but occasionally you do find some useful ones.

good font article here for weboids.

Well he said he wanted something unusual - but Ariel is just a poor (Windows) man's Helvetica - better sticking with the real thing.

If Martin23 pops his head up above the parapet he's the man to ask, a walking font knowledge bank...

Neue 95 Black is good but I'd go for this at the moment:

Or the outline version of this may look nice:

what software are you laying it out in? if you can get template dimensions i'll have a pop at a layout for you... (it might not happen very quickly though!)

This pannel will, undoubtedly, still have to change some, as im still dealing with the design behind it, so its now worth making final just yet, but...

The front pannel component layout is largely determined by whats going on on behind. Evreything has to match up to the boards hanging off the back (so its not possible to just move somthing a bit cause it looks better)

Normally the backs of the pannel mount components are larger than the fronts, so this has to be considered also.

In that, whats being delt with now is basically the printing layout, rather than the component layout.

The pannel files are cad .dxf format, but i believe these can be opened in other vector packages like coreldraw.

I understand peoples like of the helv. font, however, it does not help a great deal in the way of branding.

Im just thinking that the most recognisable brands use more specifig typefaces.... But maybee im getting mixed up between logo use and typeface use? (eg coke dosnt write its whole advert in the same script)

I dont know. Like i said, im not good at this stuff.

i didnt think the bauhaus one looked so bad in the (kind of) flesh, with the current 606 layout...

Gil is a nice font if you want something with a bit more character than Helvetica.. but to be honest I always go back to Helvetica..

I'd never buy something like a modular synth with a complicated font, it's completely counter intuitive. Modular synths are slow beasts by nature so anything that slows you down further is just going to drive people insane.
