I recommend Braintax. This guy from Leeds, I heard him first on the Mr Scruff album Trouser Jazz. Really good stuff, his latest album, Birofunk, is 'dope' as I've heard the kids say.
Riveria Hustle is one of the ultimate party songs.

I'm just playing catchup with Hiphop at the moment thanks to the recommendations on this very board.
Sort of lost the way after about 1992/93 when all that SnoopDog, G-Funk malarkey happened which bored the pants off me.
A mate of mine recommended Deltron 3030 and Handsome Boy Modelling school a couple of years back which were o.k but didn't make me go crazy for it or anything, but in the past 2 months, I've bought Anti Pop, Company Flow, Def Jux, El-P albums which are fucking ace. Spesh the Anti Pop album, which is just what I want, great lyrics over some Warp beats.
I can't believe half of the above albums are a few years old, and sound more futuristic than half the techno I've been listening too which is brand new !
Just looking forward to hearing this Buck 65 Square album which should be arriving on my doorstep anytime now (I think it was recommended by someone on this post).
phil
26th February 2003, 17:20
deltron is shit

I was just joking since you have the philie-t avatar.
I love that el-p and alec empire track on handsome boy. and I don't think anyone could have even done it. el-p's style just fits it so well.
eminem is too whiney. I think he has skills, but his lyrics are too juvenile. it reminds me of when I was 15 and angry. boring.
MUX
26th February 2003, 18:44
i also think that eminem would sound so much better if he were underground.
but funnily enuff he collaborates with Thirsten Howl, and the track is great. the really funny thing is that the albums are shit catchy and the singles are the annoying ones.. even b4 they are realeased and not cause you hear to much of them on the radio..
but he's a certainly spoiled musical star that would sounds much better if he wasnt a mtv-ass-licken-pimp when it comes to singles..
like the first time you heard d12 - purple pills it was amazing... then theradio catches it turns it into purple-hills or something and voila... your kid borther is whistling the tune
and.. you must also bow your head to Dre.. cause he's the ultimate beat doctor
PS. Guilty Conscience is a total ace track, and most certainly the most entertaining of his releases..
But.. im gonna stop writing about eminem cause he shouldn't be mentioned in this thread..
DEF-JUX & ANTI-ICON & MUSH.. it the only three words you will need in ab.hiphop. period.

I've been digging out my old Gangstarr stuff too. He tells a good story and Premier ain't half bad either.
dirtyho
27th February 2003, 10:39
Gangstarr is actually my all time favourite hip-hop act, I just cant fault premiers beats and scratching and I love gurus laconic delivery style. I would love to see premier play an eclectic type set as I reckon his record collection must be the bomb.
old skool
27th February 2003, 10:55
I bought a Premier mix cd a few years back called "101 Reality Check" or summat. I was really disappointed with it at the time and got rid. I wonder what I would have made of it if I listened to it now...?

27th February 2003, 11:26
@mux
concerning eminem and how he'd rock if he were "underground"... check out his track on soundbombing 2! hell, check out soundbombing 2 regardless, coz the mix is awesome, but eminems track on that is really, really good...
mali
27th February 2003, 17:00
well,I actually do love "weird "hip-hop that talks bout somthin'else than bitches, money & goldy cars, and that drops really nice beats and deep rough strings, just means little bit more 2 me at least than like, eminem stuff...4 example...
thanks emma I m alright,big hug 2 you,just waitin 4 sun 2 be back!!!!
& bout TTC,the lyrics are really excellent, wish I could translate some if you like...
penciLneck
27th February 2003, 17:17

Sheridan
27th February 2003, 18:23
I didn't care much for soundbombing 2.
I feel that soundbombing 1 is far superior in track quality. the only thing I don't like about it is the dj screaming over almost every track:
"evil dee is on the mix, c'mon kick it!"
that got real old real fast.
LEFTHANDLOU
27th February 2003, 23:46
Dr. Dre is cool, its comercial, but I can't front he makes some catchy classic beats and all, but fucking Dj premier is the mother fucking man. Premier is at the heart of true hip hop culture. Just to clarify there is no bad Gandstar album, they set it off since no more mr. nice guy.
BTW they got the new album dropping this march.
Big Daddy Kane, Slick Rick, and PETE ROCK is where its at

isn't slick rick back in prison again?
Sheridan
28th February 2003, 16:12
yes. there was a thread about it on this board about a week ago. but I can't remember what it was titled.
penrith
1st March 2003, 21:01
what's the deal with slick rick now then? i know he was having trouble staying in the country (i was in NY over the summer and there was a slick rick benefit concert) but why's he in prison...far as my hiphop recommends go i have to double-up MF Doom, its just the best, and anything he touches (MF Grimm album, M.I.C. album) turns to gold. same goes for his old crew K.M.D. early nineties - de la, pharcyde, prince paul is another with the midas touch, freestyle fellowship...things on fondle'em tend to be pretty good, tho it's now defunct...juggaknots album has seen the proper light of day (with many extra tracks) that it deserves...anything on def jux. i don't like anticon or clouddead or any of that 'i'm such a nerd but look how funny my t-shirt is and does this baseball cap make me look like a big boy' crap...aceyalone! Maaaaaaan-tronix! -this stuff is light years ahead and always will be...

The INS Got him for performing in the States Illigaly or some shit.
In the Word of the Slickster himself " even if I get deported i own america".
K.M.D is the shit, I think there is this long lost, never released album from them out there
