I may go to this - but it's a mid-weeker so I gotta get a train home, or stay in the smoke, but get up at 6.30am the next day and brave the commuters. Any idea when it will finish anyone?

Please... anyone who attends this: Post a review afterwards.

Please include diagrams and a full recording. (I never ask too much, do I?)

I wish I could blink there.

If I go I'll take my digicamera and post up some stills, maybe even little bits of video - but my camera uses some weird codec and I've never tried converting it.

dirty ho: If you do, I will grant you a wish.

Or... I will be so grateful, that by the mere power of my suggesting that you deserve a wish granted... something wonderful is bound to happen.

Life is just funny like that.

yes. I finished school and moved from florida at the end of december. then I went to scotland for a few weeks. and now I am in the DC area. northern virginia to be exact.

karitek
25th February 2003, 19:28
i'm from virginia as well...not sure i ever told ya before. how's the scene down there? i have given up on the techno scene in nyc...very looped and very boring. i think that even the producers i like in the area have given up on the scene itself - most don't play out here....on the other hand, the noise and weird breakcore scene seems to be promising :)

Sheridan

yes you told me about virginia. you are from va beach, right? the scene in DC is shitty. we get good house djs here, herbert just played (fucking awesome) jullias papp is coming as is king britt, mark farina. as for techno, it is not popular here. I was one of the only techno djs in the city. and no one brings in any techno guys here. I would love to throw my own party and get people like paul birken to come and play, but I know that the market really isn't here. most people still don't know what techno is. I was talking to a promoter at one club here and was telling her I played techno and I was wondering if they ever booked techno djs. she told me they just had christopher lawrence play. so I think that if that is their perception on tehcno, I don't want any part of it.
I have been finding myself going to more rock shows as of late. like j mascus and the fog, and I will be seeing mike doughty (soul coughing) on thursday. that is why I would like to make a trip up to ny or philly to see some stuff.

I took a little video clip on my digicam, had to be subtle no kit allowed! Jamie did a live set first with jeff's visuals - I think it confused/disturbed a significant proportion of the audience. I liked it. Then Herberts big band played and were really good, an orchestra produces such a full sound especially in that space, so much timbre, it swung and they got a standing ovation at the end. Very impressed. Lovely dinner at Crispy Duck in Chinatown afterwards and got persuaded to stay the night in london, hence very little sleep and missing train. Altogether a very pleasant evening. I'll try and post the video this evening, its from a stills camera so it's real small and low quality.

buuuuuuuuuuhuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu . butt a crap !

karitek
13th March 2003, 12:30
that was really really wicked. jamie's set especially blew me away. i loved how he used multiple microphones for effects and he just has such good stage presence. he is amazing.

herbert's band was cool too. i wish he did more of the madder stuff (like when he had them rip up the newspapers) though. but, it is really amazing that he put that all together.

it was fucking great. i managed to get one ticket at the last minute so went on my lonesome, but had a thoroughly good time.

jamie's set blew me away too - awesome stuff. you must go see his show if you get the chance.

herbert was great too - i agree with kari that it would have been better if he'd done more of the crazy shit, but it was still a pleasure to behold. the last track brought the house down.

but i was right at the front so i didn't have the best view - what was herbert doing? similar stuff to jamie except he was sampling and messing about with 20 live musicians rather than just his own voice. breaking out the harpsichord was a nice touch though.

one of the best nights i've had out in ages, even if i was saddo billy no-mates.

karitek
13th March 2003, 13:39
i think herbert was sampling a lot of the sounds and chopping them up, similar to what he does in his radio boy shows. the last song was amazing - who was the black singer who joined danny for it? she was v v cool.

I loved the little accordian sequence herbert did very Gallic,.I think the shows were quite different, Jamie's is more "challenging" on an audience. I went with a girl and she wasn't that into Jamie's show in that venue, but thought Herbert's was more suited to it. I kind of agree with that sentiment. Herbert was definitely doing some sampling and shit - that bit where all the musicians ripped up "the rag" and he made some crazy rhythms out of it was wicked.

Marolo
13th March 2003, 14:16
Mathew Herbert's thing wasn't really what i was expecting, more on the lounge/exotica vibe, but still great. At one point, he got all the people in his orchestra to tear up a tabloid with the picture of Tony Blair on the cover, and then sampled that and used it as a loop. But on the whole, as Kari and Mr.lizard said, there wasn't that much electronic input from him on stage, which is a shame, but he did compose all the orchestra bits apparently.
Jamie was full on electronic madness though - loved it!
I need the contact details for his seamstress too

I was just joking because Jamie always wears great costumes. I think jamie designs all of them himself, doesn't he? or is that Pablo Fiasco too?

invisibleplanet
15th March 2003, 15:56
heard they were designed by Pablo Fiasco (http://www.no-future.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2273)
but don't quote me on that....it could just be the Super_Collider gear, and not Jamie's recent tutu garb.

I guess I'm saying nothing new here, when I add that i think Lidell and his peers are truly talented. After years of listening to their recordings at home, his recent live performance with Super_Collider was beyond expectation.
