I love this shit, in fact I did my degree dissertation about Kung Fu movies. I'll start us off with a classic.
Legenday Weapons of Kung Fu starring and directed by Liu Chia Liang (Lau Kar Leung). Excellent demonstrations of many traditional weapons plus humour and plot - not in the same film surely ;). This guy is my favourite celluloid martial arts performer - his moves are real kung fu.

Which is your favourite?

sorry, the matrix has a good "twist" and is well choreographed but the performers cannot match the choreography

Dirty Ho is one for the discerning viewer, very cultured film with many classical references and intricate choreography - not for action freaks though, if you're one of those try Eastern Condors - the HK take on Rambo

I got accosted by the armed response squad practicing with my wooden sword in the park in brighton. It was just after that nutter chopped up that Lib Dem MP and someone must have seen me and phoned the police. Actually I tell a lie, it was an extendable sword made of metal and so probably looked like a real one. We all had a laugh about it afterwards - even thought they had pointed guns at me.

The Legend of Fong Sai Yuk is a definite favourite, I've only seen FSY 1 and 2 though (however Jet Li is not starring in the other ones (or so Tomas keep telling me :) which is really too bad, FSY is the best character he's ever done).

(I'm going to watch Crouching Tiger again this weekend though, haven't seen it since I saw it at the cinema, it left me speechless back then, it'll be interesting watching it again now that I've somewhat pryed into the Kung Fu-genre)

dirtyho
21st February 2003, 12:12
FSY are good jet li films - I'm not mad on the Once upon a time.. wirework madness of tsui hark. It gets a bit boring after a while - wirework in Crouching Tiger was really well done - I was surprised at how much i liked that film - what do you think about this upcoming Quentin tarantino Kung Fu film "Kill Bill" again i think the perfomers will let the choreography down - they don't have the physical skills neccessary. Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz - come on!

fsy, the swordsman series although swordsman 3 is fairly whack, the wu-tang series, drunken master 1 & 2, dragonlord just because of the intro "rugby" match

What? Lucy Liu and Cameron Diaz in a Tarantinomovie? This is an outrage! An outrage I tell you!
^_^

Well seriously, I'm with you; they are too Hollywood-productionstyle too be in a Tarantinomovie, or such is my first thought about it anyway - the thing is, Tarantino has got skills; it may very well be that he works it out. Then again, need I say more than 'Charlie's Angels' to put an end to that thought..

have you seen revenge of the drunken master?
it hasn't got jackie chan in it, but it has got someone called johnny chan (or something like) is that his brother, or is chan a common name?

in all likelihood there is no relation decadnids, after bruce lee died there was a ton of bruce li's, bruce lii's and what have you popping up in low budget flix like that as well...

haven't you heard of jackie's older brother charlie ;)

also names are transliterated differently by different systems - wade-giles, pinyin etc. Hence Liu Chia Liang and Lau Kar Leung being the same person.

yeah what I thought, although they did look pretty similiar, good film non-the-less mainly due to the comedy over dubbing,

i saw "the prodigal son" the other day. it's the best kung fu movie i've seen. not that i'm an expert on this matter.

in regards to 'kill bill', I am 99% sure cameron diaz is not in the film. I saw the trailer for it when I saw 'gangs of new york' and the main actress is uma thurman. with lucy lui playing the bad guy, err girl.

my favorite kung fu movie is probably 'fist of legend'. that opening fight sequence is sick.
especially the part when jet li dislocates the one guys jaw and his sensai has to pop it back in.
my other favorite is 'the odd couple'. starring samo hung from 'martial law' fame. for those of us in the states who got that show. the odd couple choreography is amazing. it revolves around weapons (spear and sword) and the moves are so acrobatic and intricate. a big recommendation from me. it is also pretty funny.

hej, i´ve said i lastnight. i say it again.

tai chi master and shogun assassin. damn great movies !

but one thing i love about bruce lee most be Fist of fury one.
theres this scene where two bad guy´s have a dialog and bruce enters the room all of a sudden. the funny parts come in when the camera man Fast zoom at one of the bad guy´s nipple.. that cracks me up all the time.. hehe.

Anyone ever see a mystical hong kong flick called

Tzu Warriors? Had this wizard dude who attacked people with streams of hair that shot out from his eye brows...

Was also the source of inspiration that John Carpenter got the Storms from Big Trouble in Little China...

prodigal son is excellent "your kung-fu is a womans kung fu"
you are right sheridan it is uma thurman - my mistake
samo hung rocks, i much prefer him to jackie chan
zoo warriors is typical of chinese ghost story type films lots of wirework
yojimbo is still my favourite samurai movie - but the lone cub series is extreme and very cool
some very discerning viewers on this board ;)

all with bruce lee is the shit!!! he´s unique ;)

the newer stuff from jet lee is also great, cause he´s one of the fastest guy´s (without edv manipulation)...

and "one´s a time in china" rules in any case...

so take care about the bad shaolin

when jet li was filming one of the lethal weapon movies here in the states, the director told jet li to slow down because his moves were pretty much a blur and you couldn't tell what he was doing. also the other actors couldn't keep up with the blocks.

dirtyho
24th February 2003, 16:41
yeah all the kung-fu/action films do this stuff to make the fights look good in celluloid. in a real fight if you kick someone you'll probably kick them in the shin cos it's close to you and they won't see it easy, in the films you'd do a spinning jumping roundhouse like jean claude. same with punches, really you'd just punch them straight with the shortest arm travel possible, in the films you'd make the largest hooking action possible to give the cameraman as much footage to capture as possible and to make the move look obvious for the audience. martial arts are full of subtle movements that audiences cannot easily interpret
