google have been threatening media outlets with legal action if they continue to use the brand name as a verb

Didn't Spam try this once too? Not had much success have they?

I suspect the Spam one was an attempt to gain publicity and remind/let people know what Spam is rather than an actual attempt to stop the word bing used.

i think they're worried about losing control of the brand

but, fuck, yeah... the days before google... dark days indeed. i see yahoo! now and think, "i used that!?"

remember when Yahoo! used to be a directory. You had to get your website registered with them before it became searchable. Very dark days.

Google will lose this. Googling is already a verb, it's only a matter of time before it gets in the OED, then they're fucked.

Actually 'dogpiling' sounds good as a verb, I reckon it'll catch on ;)

But Google aren't living in the real world:

Google wishes users to "conduct a Google search", rather than use any of the terms that have entered into pop culture since it launched eight years ago.

'Conduct a google search'? Morons.
