good play to stay in london?

hey guys, can anyone recommend a good not suicidally dreary hostel or bed and breakfast in London, got some friends that are visiting and i wanna suggest somewhere to stay. all the spots i know cost a fortune or make you consider killing yourself like the last tenant probably did...

AFAIK there are two nice places to stay in London:-

1) With some mates
2) In an expensive hotel.

Depending on what they want to do they might find it actually better to stay somewhere in greater london that has a good train service. I have no suggestions either though.. the options are terrible or for very rich people.

hop into a cab and tell the driver to take you to a hotel in whatever area that costs no more than x amount. i've done that a few times and it's worked out grand.

Found a backstreet hotel which wasn't too extortionate for a night of exsex once :/ Can't remember where as I was very pissed (hence the exsex).

Ahaaa now I might have a suggestion... mate works for a short term apartment let place... places in Soho / west end that are cheaper than hotels - not cheap cheap, but amazing for what you get. PM me for details.
