Paddy

History of Violence is Cronenburg isn't it?

everyone i know who didn't like it said it was because of the main performances of the backpackers. i thought they were pretty dead on actually. pleasant but rather dull. there's some funny swipes at sydney types as well. I bet northern australian audiences were cheering throughout.
and for me the most chilling part was the bit in the cafe. it captured perfectly that horrible moment where one is suddenly expected to be the male protector.

i saw it in the cinema but the sound went all fucked at the end so i walked out and got a refund. i did enjoy it up to that though, very well done 'it could happen to YOU' shit.

i thought the backpackers performances were pretty decent tbh, good acting, they really had the fear.

The last scary movie I watched w/ Hostel...and I didn't get all the way thru it..
It wasn't scary, just very gross....
I've heard alot about Wolf Creek..and I'm not sure I could handle it..
I did dig SAW 1 and 2 tho..

this film made me take the scenic (and more populated!) coast road from melbourne to brisbane, rather than the inland route...
good stuff. I can't believe that john jarrett is the same bloke that used to host "better homes and gardens" on tv here!
Paddy
2nd August 2006, 04:16
john jarret was fuckin crazy, he played the part beautifully.

ha, watched this in Australia when i was there on a big outdoor screen with bats flying ahead. added to the atmosphere!
Hostel - what is that mayonnaise that comes out of her optic nerve???

i watched it the other night - good quality horror. nice slow build up of tension. good acting.
one flaw in the story that really annoyed me tho cos everything else was so real - how did the baddie get into the right car?
great apart from that tho
Paddy
2nd August 2006, 13:48
hehe that was the only bit that annoyed me too, coincidence tends to annoy me, lazy scripting. i can let Greg McLean off with artistic licence on this one though, and he does end that scene with a particularly gruesome death too.
strange the way all out gore doesn't really bother me, but then when a film like this comes along and has a distinct lack of gore, but suggests it very well, or has just enough gore in the right places, my stomach turns. ahhh, the power of the human mind eh?

yeah it reminded of blair witch but a lot better. waiting for something to happen is more scary than something happening.

yeah i liked blair witch. hype doesn't really affect me. i thought it was quite good that they managed to get so much tension out of so little actually happening.

Yeah I thought so. Hype doesn't affect me cos I never watch trailers or read about films and dodge any marketing. You can enjoy films a lot more that way.

I thought it was an excellent film, partially ruined by a couple of horror film cliches,
I mean, when the 2 girls manage to get into one of his cars, get the keys, manage to escape and nearly crash off a cliff edge, then they do exactly what you wouldn't do; get out, push the car off the edge of the cliff edge, and then wait around for the guy to turn up and then realise they've fucked themselves ... is there anyone who would be so stupid? I'd be driving like a maniac instead of trying to be clever.
Really want to watch it again too. Was well scared watching it alone.

aye basically, like when one burd has the gun pointed at the dudes head from about 3 feet and misses. i would NOT be missing that nutters head.

Oh yeah I remember that bit too now you mention it,
I'd have made sure his prostrate body was dead by stabbing him as many times was as necessary (and probably a lot more) in the head and upper body.
I found myself thinking this and then realise "oh, it's only a film",
That's the power of film, I suppose.
Paddy
2nd August 2006, 18:27
haha yeah i found myself thinkin "i'd take that rifle and repeatedly crack him in the back of the head until his skull caved in..."

2nd August 2006, 19:26
yeah, that did strike me as bleedin' obvious at the time, but on the whole I liked it quite a lot.
Really liked Blair Witch inspite of the hype. I think the fault was with the hype and not the film.

You don't expect to be un against an unrelenting almost supernatural psychokiller unless YOU KNOW you're in a film.

well, if i woke up hogtied, escaped, then saw a friend tied to a post, covered in blood with a badly bust up face and some mad cunt pointing a rifle at her/him then i'd be pretty certain that if i got them down i wouldn't be letting them get back up again any time soon.

For anyone who appreciates this sort of film, I HIGHLY recommend seeing the French film Haute Tension (High Tension, also known as Switchblade Romance).
