defo. but i think its kind of the successor. The sopranos is well written, but still has to have the bangs and stuff and at least be a bit obvious at times - deadwood doesnt make it easy at all. how milch gets away with this, and the money to do it, is amazing

it's amazin. i was watching series 1 ep 11 last night and ian mcshane had an actual bona fide big shakespearean style soliloquy - while getting a blowjob. its up there with dennis potter a lot of the time.

mind you it can be patchy - but thats cos american dramas have to have so many eps.

spoon

there's going to be one or two feature length deadwoods after this series to tie everything up apparently.

Deadwood is great and smarter than the Sopranos, but the Sopranos suck me in. I can't get enough of that show.

there's about two funny bits in this 5 minute skit, fans of the show will find both of them amusing.

I watched that one last night as well strangely enough. I think it may be patchy because they have a different director and writer every episode.

Finished watching the first series and am totally hooked. thanks spoon.

I read an interview with Milch in american heritage mag. He says deadwood is about order developing from choas and he was going to set the show in Rome, but they came out with ..Rome. A different show on hbo. He said the way people talk on the show is authentic. People had more regional accents cause of the lack of mass media and all people knew was the kings james bible and shakespeare. He mentioned a book called the American language and he also read lots of correspondence letters between common folk. Like one miner writing to his brother. etc...

watched the last episode last night - all i can say is that i hope to fuck they get those feature lengths made or it will have been a serious anticlimax even though season 3 was still utterly fantastic. it'll be a while before something like that comes along again, if ever.

i'm going to rewatch the whole thing!

yeah. I was a little disappointed with the whole of season two, it only seemed to really pick up again by the end of season 3 and then the last ep, was like ok, no apocalypse?

missing it already.

spoon
30th August 2006, 15:48
yeah, no big massive war, maybe that would have been too easy. it was great though with sy tolliver going completely insane (finally) and al's moment of tension in the room with hearst - fucking hell, it was good.

still some story left though, fingers crossed!

just in case anyone's wondering...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadwood_%28TV_series%29#Cance llation
On May 13, 2006, HBO confirmed it has opted not to pick up the options of the actors, which were set to expire on June 11, 2006. This means that there will likely be no fourth season with the current cast as it stands, though HBO has stressed that the show is not cancelled and talks regarding its future are ongoing. The chance of the show returning in its current state of cast and crew, however, is small. [1]

On June 5, 2006, HBO and creator David Milch agreed to have two two-hour telefilms in place of a fourth season, after Milch declined a short-order of 6 episodes. This is because in the show's original form, each season was only a few days, with each episode being one day, in the town of Deadwood. The final two-hour format will release these time restraints and allow for a broader narrative to finish off the series.[2]

Yer_Maw
30th August 2006, 15:54
ja. but milch is working on something else though, so it was either cancelled or he got fed up.

fair enough with specials. but theyve done it with the sopranos too, and all it does is make the last series rather strange without any conclusion. milking bastardos.

I loved all the monty pythonesque characters. there were quite a few excellent bit parters just there for the comedy value. It was also a nice twist to introduce two even more evil characters, Tolliver and Hurst after thinking Al was as evil as you could get. Hurst in the end won the prize of most worthy of carrying a pitchfork, while Al showed some hidden fluffyness.

Yer_Maw
30th August 2006, 16:01
yeah that was a well done. how good someone is is defined by the more evil people in the town, not by how good they are.

*SPOILER ALERT***

al's the good guy, but hed murder an innocent whore to protect trixie. Is that good? mon the milch relatavism. the fact is, the chinese, the gang (plus midget) and all the yankton troops are all still there. ok, he got what he wanted, but there still could be amassive war inre: election rigging

spoon
30th August 2006, 16:28
yeah, it takes a bit to slide into that realisation - you can't apply your own morals to that time and place, brilliant. they made al sick in the second series because he was taking over the show and they had to ease off and allow the other characters to develop, that's where it all shifted around and became clearer i think (bullock=borderline psychotic, al=ruthless but principled etc).
