View Full Version : Whats the best music in this heat?

CV
4th July 2006, 11:08
as the heat affects your state of mind, i guess it effects the way you hear music.

also, the humidity in the air ( or lack of ) and the air molecules getting heated up, actually effects the way sound energy itself travels, so music does actually sound different.

(mostly this poll is just to get rid of the crap one about favourite car)

reggae. it's incredibly effective in extreme heat, even if you're not mad into it otherwise.

4th July 2006, 11:14
yay, i am missing the reggae/dancehall/ragga option as well.

jukka

eeven though i don't mind a cold beer and punk music in the heat.

gotta say, hot sunny days in europe (not Uk) is one of the times techno really works for me, especially of the wonky-sqwonky kind.

Everything sounds better in the sun. Theres something about Reggae working better definitely but also something fiercely experimental works great with sun streaming in... The only better time is when it's snowed and the world is covered in an anechoic blanket.

Blues n ragtime all the way.. deep south washboard grooves and blind guitarists on crackly recordings from 1940. It's the sound of "sitting on the porch in a heatwave".

just goin by the other weekend...

lying in leith links park with the messenger dub soundsystem on with a heat over 28 degs... i hardly ever listen to dub/reggae but in the heat and the amount of rum/acid consumed.. it seemed perfect

headphones are making my head too sweaty...

Radio3 in the car though... loving the classical through urban london mish mash.

The dynamics on Radio3 are quite varied as well - it can get quite emotional if you crank it up during a quiet bit then forget.

Raggae/Dub for me, I have fond memories of whenever there's one of those silly festival things in south london - they always have some right on cause - like raise awareness of domestic violence or whatever, there's always a massive dub tent - and the sound dub, combined with a sometime spliff and a decent piece of hash cake - can't be beaten. Last one I went to I had a big box of hash flapjack to distribute amongst the happy campers - was excellent.

Mind you decent techno/electronic is close behind. I'm with Cut Out, the wonky/squelchy kind... You can't beat lounging out in the baking sun, with some massive cabs throwing out some serious bass. I don't know - does the sun have a frequency? Maybe music can resonate with it...

Paddy

well, those two are good, they remind me of being a 15 year old carefree skateboarder, but there are more.

the whole of Bizarre Ride 2 for Pharcyde, and Heiroglyphics is pretty good when it comes to SOM.

best pharcyde song's On The Downlow anyways.

a lot of people are spot on. it is a tuff call.
for me, I dig on hip hop, deep fucked techno or electro and certainly reggae/dub, which is what I voted for.

pharcyde, tribe called quest, blackstar and company flow do me right in a summer time heat wave.

for techno I would go with cristian's dungeon master. some of the tracks are deep sweaty grooves.

I like miles' bitches brew for a little jazz.
but I saw bring on rhythm & sound.

Drone and noise music when it's absolutely baking is great. My poor dog dolly collapsed in fits with heat-stroke a few days ago during the height of it :( I imagine that she was hearing something like a sonic youth freewheeling in her little head. Had to rush her to the vet and an injection brought her crashing back to life.

As for me, I like the early lee perry/wailers in the sun, especially if I'm by the seaside in Kerry...pure joy. Digable planets are great for summer hip-hop. Woodie guthrie's dust bowl ballads and robert johnsons's delta blues are very nice too.

There must be some great middle-eastern music too?
