hey board-
im doing research on NWA's classic album 'Straight Outta Compton' and was wondering if anyone had suggestions as far as resources, personal accounts (whether in support for or against this group and this album) and generally any info they may want to relate to me.
your input would be invaluable.
peace all.

The album is a classic no doubt, pretty much spawned a genre. Even if they were all studio gangsters. Dr dre was and is a marketing genius. On the track "Express yourself" he said he doesnt smoke weed or sens, cause it gives a brother braindamage, and braindamage on the mic don't manage...nothing"
Then used ~"The chronic" as a great marketing tool for his solo album. To great effect. sampling george clinton and "pioneering the G-funk era" ??! The follow up Efill4zaggin had a great first side, but then went down hill. 100 miles and running is a banger.

im sure you have seen the vh-1 behind the music on this subject, if not check that shit out, very good background evaluation. there was a book about easy-e and the creww, ill have to check and see what the name of it was. but look on amazon, and see if it pulls up any books/pece:)p

it can summed up in one sentence..

'You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge'

that says a whole story in itself...

The funny thing is Ice cube did a degree in architecture. Dr dre was in a transvestite band called the world class wrecking crew. Easy-E was a child from a middle class family. and mc ren was born in Chelmsford Essex. Mc Yella was from braintree.

well i bought the album for 225kr without thinking, just got to have in stock.

loved it when i was at a bar in stockholm. and this guy was arrested by cops and the dj played "Fuck the police" and the cops all went mad and stuff. just like a movie.
sadly the poor guy who was knocked to the ground went away in a police car just because he had a Spraycan and was a little drunk.

(what a fuck aim i talking about, really ?).

i appreciate all the input you have given.
i have a few questions:
1.) how old were you when you first heard it?
2.) what was your initial reaction?
3.) do you think there has been another hip hop/
rap release that has had the impact that Straight
Outta Compton did?
4.) did you find the album offensive or humorous?

thanks again all.

1. 13 I think.
2. at first I didn't like it, but that was because I didn't start to like hip hop untill later on.
3. I think anything by public enemy. straight outta compton is a great important release. but for me I found public enemy to truly raise the bar for hip hop that few have even attempted to reach.
4. I don't find it offensive since it takes a lot to offened me. and I don't find it humorous since I don't have a sense of humor.

1. 15-16
2. It's got a good beat and you can dance to it
3. hmmmmmm. Fugees "the score", or Tribe called Quest "the low end theory"
4. neither.. I don't usually focus on lyrics. I was more into the soundscapes within the tracks.. crazy stuff dre was doing with all the sirens, screams, etc..
