Aye it's a pretty representative selection.. That petrol emotion... thats a blast from the past.. I had that 'abandon' track on a tape of other baggy stuff I'd taped off the radio at the time.. I know I heard the Paris Angels track but I don't remember it.

Jesus.. that Northside record was the first 12" I ever bought ;)

V Knid esq
4th June 2006, 21:24
I dug out my old 7" of the Paris Angels song recently - I loved it back in the day but it REALLY does not stand up now. The electronic bits are pretty shabby.

World Of Twist were the best.

ckpqerjwrpwp

Don't remember World of Twist really, I remember deciding I didn't like them but probably based on something vapid.

V Knid esq
4th June 2006, 21:30
You should check em out - they're very different from the others... they had a great line in Hawkwind style Moog swooshes and more than a little touch of the glitterball about them.

ckpqerjwrpwp
4th June 2006, 21:35
It has 'Never Enough' by the Cure on.. I remember there was a b-side on that called "Harold and Joe" that i liked.

thepigjockey
4th June 2006, 21:40
I thought I knew who World of Twist were and then realised I got them mixed up with Intastella (who I liked, though probably I shouldn't have).

At that time there was some great stuff coming out and also some crap, just like now. It would be lovely to look back and say it was all great but that wouldn't be right. MC Tunes???? Adamski!! pfgh

There's lots of versions of that track, the best is on the original 12" and it still sounds pretty good to me. http://www.discogs.com/release/86134

V Knid esq
4th June 2006, 21:45
Oh I'll see if I can find that... It's a really strong song, just the execution is dodgy on the version I've got. There's a lovely completely acoustic cover by indie-schmindie shamblers Velocette.

Ride are great. Bought things by Ride and can still listen to them, bought things by The Mock Turtles, the Belltower, Slowdive and Curve and remember enjoying them but chucking them out ages ago.

At least I never bought anything by Carter USM.

V Knid esq
4th June 2006, 22:16
I saw Carter several times :(

Don't dismiss Slowdive. Check out their 'Souvlaki' album, they started taking on tons of electronica and dub influences... it's beautiful.

Ride were indeed magnificent, they were our local heroes growing up near Oxford.

The band I've just rediscovered from that period who sound spectacular now is Bongwater. Kramer's production is AMAZING.

ckpqerjwrpwp

I was really into Ride.. but haven't listened in a long time, could still get a kick out of their first album and EP's I reckon. I stil really like the first few slowdive EP's Curve used to get crazy press but I don't think they ever really stood up to the hype in the end.

Bongwater... now I remember liking some stuff.. were they shouty?

Word, the Poppies, the Stuffies and the Neds were like the Holy Trinity in Brum around 1990 and I remember a gig at the Villa Leisure Centre in December 89 with all three on the bill along with Mega City 4. It was the height of Grebo, you needed to have one of these t-shirts and long hair to get in!

i remember after the cov gig we were reading nme and there was a letter complaining about the 'stupid idiots diving off the stage', unfortunately someone got an accidental boot in the face and a broken nose, i think it was from bobby rauchenberg, or it could have been liam. good times.

BONGWATER ARE ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS

although knid, you cant really talk about them in comparison with all these uk indie bands, they are totally different scene, energy, everything. they are like a psychedelic folk-rock version of the B-52s.

'the power of pussy' is one of my favourite ever albums

carter were DREADFUL. saw them millions of times due to their friendship with senseless things. totally not my thing.

i really loved the wonderstuff when i was at school. i remember poring over their lyrics in 4th year biology class with my best mate. great days.

ride were amazing and still sound really great actually.

hey emma - i've got 2 senseless things eps and the 1st Lp i was gonna sell on Ebay, but always seem to hangon to cos of the great covers! if you want them for old times sake lemme know and we can talk business ;) I didn't know Edsel Auctioneer really, but I still listen to the Pale Saints Lp a bit, nice Sunday music.

i was right into PWEI (clint's like a millionaire doing music for CSI now innit) and I still thing the 1st Neds ep is good (the rest is shite) i loved mega city 4 as a yoof, but now they make me all embaressed.

Ride were cool but that guy's voice was well annoying. Slowdive were and still are totally great, first 2 eps and Pygmalion are ace... keep trying to find the rest but hard to get hold of...I had a real soft spot for Chapterhouse, apart from those goddam weak ass home counties vocals.

Papa Sprain were pretty far out - got a good interview in Lime Lizard with them, think they more in an AR Kane vein.

Cranes and Curve are still going strong, so you could argue they are the shoegazers who've outlasted everyone else. Dunno what Curve are like but Cranes 'Particles and Waves' is a cool album.

Special mention to Revolver - their 'Heaven Sent an Angel' was pretty cool shoegazer-pop i seem to remember, they were hailed as the new beatles, they disappeared.

Up to date shoegazing? Gotta be the new Jesu ep 'Silver' - going to see them tonight in nottingham (if i get enuff work done).

Not shoegazing but still undeniably dour, whiteboy, dreamy, indie masterpieces; there's a whole new thread for ya:

Swervedriver: Raise

Sonic Youth: Daydream Nation

Just for a day rerelease (http://www.discogs.com/release/575307)
Souvlaki rerelease (http://www.discogs.com/release/575851)

not that long ago before I'd actually listened to them again I was dismissing slowdive as being emabarssingly twee or something but listening to their stuff again reminded me just how great they were. And apparently something I read somewhere how much more of a bunch of twats oasis were for getting them dropped, though I always thought oasis were a bunch of twats anyway.

yeah, i was always embaressed about saying i liked slowdive but not about chapterhouse - got it the wrong way round really, but slowdive got a right pasting by the press once they decided they'd had enough of dreamy music.

I saw slowdive live at reading university once and they were fucking heavy... of course they weren't Emperor, but they were heavy in a different way, the drummer was beating the shit out of his kit and the guitars were swooping around like drunken pteradactyls. i used to catch a glmpse of them coming out of The Cell rehearsal rooms in Reading and think, 'you jammy bastards'
