Does anyone know if any of these exist? Or whether they think it/they would be a good idea.

I had an idea at the weekend about doing somesort of Independent/Electronic /Underground/Dance/TBD Music Conference.

A sort of gathering for the industry (such as it exists),it was a talk with a mate of mine about the lack of any industry unity that led me to this idea in the first place. I'm not hoping to solve that, but my experience of working in industries where a lot of work is done by freelancers and small independent companies is that things like this are good (even if its just an excuse of an almighty weekend long piss-up).

So as such I was wondering if any already existed, were/are they any good? Does anyone here think that one would be a good idea, and would they attend if one were organised possibly on a European level. (cos that's where I live)

I'm thinking a weekend long affair, with producers, labels, distribution companies, vinyl pressing plants, kit, computer and software manufacturers and developers, invited and a variety of talks, seminars, trade stands and so on - all aranged along the lines of a classic trade show really..

Like I said its just the germ of an idea - so I thought I'd bounce it of my No-Future buds and see what the reaction was...

Any opinions, thoughts, ideas offers to help out gratefully received...

i think that they were trying to aim for something like that with sonar, but from what i understand it wasn't the place for small or individual companies/producers/vendors/specialists/etc. i could be very wrong though. i think that it would be a cool idea though. you'd have to cater to a lot of people though. imagine how many people would show?!

what about the 'winter music conference' that is held every year in miami florida??
actually it should be starting up in about a month. that has loads of seminars and talks and parties. although it has gotten a bit trashy in recent years. too much fashion, politics, and attitude. although I think a european version to rival the florida one would be great. I would certainly attend. and it could be geared more towards the techno side of things. that means no oakie!!!

I may be wrong on this but I do believe there was such a conference held in Expo Halle, Bern/Biel in Switzerland last year or the year before that (?). Don't know whether it was a success or not but I heard alot of the US/Detroit bods were in attendance....

Also, I am aware of a music conference being held in Amsterdam around November time which generally sees alot of folk get together too...........

Whilst I'm thinking, isn't there something in Berlin too or is that a figment of my imagination as I could be getting ocnfused with
"Musik und Maschine" happening.

its fucking stupid. Sort of thing the talentless majority would go for. I could see Mike P with a stand there. with his soul less shit.

you are right phil. if you think aphex and tom wouldnt like it then it is quite clearly a rubbish idea.

All of this just takes the soul away from music making. If your music iis good in some way and people like it, it will come through and get sold. if only a few people on the net like it, only a few people will buy it. what is the point of a trade fair? cant people just make music?

I agree.

If Dick and Tom think it's a shit idea I ain't going.

Same way if Enid and Alf from next door, or Disco Daz (or Daz to me like ... he's a top trance producer from up here), Tom and Jerry, Thelma and Louise and any other half arsed names I can drop aren't going..

Then I ain't.

End of.

Its normally people who make shit music who go to things like this.

I heard the Old Gits from Harry Enfield have their own conference in the kitchen every third thursday.

What about Futuresonic? Is that not still running - i'm sure they did something in manchester last year.

@ IP >>>>> sounds cosy, can we toast marshmallows on the fire :)
accompanied by mugs of supremo hot chocolate specially imported from Switzerland ?

As for a music conference being non-sensical.........errrrrr the whole point is to get bods outta the studio and socialise.... surely no harm in that ?

Ava

no it was a three day festival last year and the year before. workshops in the day and parties at night, AE, MC terre thaemlitz, pole and others have played in recent years. the names right on the tip of my tongue...

anyway, for any bristolians, we have a 3day VJ festival at the cube cinema, featuring yeeking, motorboy, bedouin ascent and others. checkwww.cubecinema.com (http://www.cubecinema.com)
