View Full Version : I've just fucked my Sennheiser headphones up

This is the second pair of those nice folding ones I've had where one of the wires has broken right at the point where it joins the plug, through being bashed about in my pocket. I know I shouldn't complain as I'm sure the corner-cutting in their design allows them to be so very cheap for such great headphones, but bugger me the wires are flimsy, and the moulded rubber surround on the plug seems completely designed to stop you stripping the wire and mending them - it's almost impossible to cut away the rubber around the wire to free enough wire to bind it back to the other end of the break without cutting the copper itself.... the two cores of wire inside each insulation are the thinnest wire i've ever seen and practically disintegrate if you touch them.

Should I just cut the wire, get a new plug and wire it on, or is this just going to cause me so much grief that I might as well spend £30 on a new pair?

Have you tried sending them back to Sennheiser? Not sure what to expect, but I reckon if you write a fairly decent letter. ie not 'these headphones are fucking shit, give me my money back'.

Not sure what you'd get, but I did it with my Oakley sunglasses after I fell on them when on my inline skates (I never told them about this), I just said the lens had started to crack - they sent me some new ones.

Oakley are great for that. A friend of mine recently got his eyes lasered. Oakley replaced his prescription lenses with normal ones for only a tenner.

I was going to do just that, but unfortunately after a bit of exploratory poking with a sharp knife I got carried away and stripped the casing off the whole plug, then cut and stripped the cable... so I do not think they will be too keen to oblige :!

do you mean px100's ??? i totally love mine - they sound so great... only problem is the design for me... those squidgey bits on top really accentuate baldness by raising the band 5 mm off your head. it's worth it just cis they are so good though ;) never had a problem with the wires, but i'd buy a new pair if i did (jesus, this sounds like a harmony central review)

Joe, they should be fully modular. I've had the same pair for 10 years now. You can just buy a new lead and plug it in. Might take a bit of a jank to get the old one off but they'll do it at the shop if you're nervous. The last one I bought was about £7.

I think sennheiser have a good reputation for repairs. I heard that they will usually do repairs at cost. Don't buy a new pair, for gods sake man think of the environment :) If you can't be bothered stick em on ebay and usually someone else will happily take on a bit of hassle for a discount.

@Jonnyspeed - modular? how do you mean? where can i find how to dismantle them in that case?

Sounds like Mr Speed has got your headphones confused with the HD25/25SPs which are indeed completely modular - but as they're £90/160 a pair that you are not talking about those Sennheiser headphones.

Sorry - when I bought mine they were all modular.

Seriously a good pair is really worth it - the sound reproduction is amazing and when they break you spend less on new parts. I bought the 560 Ovations but they are open so you might want to have a look at some closed ones.

In 10 years I've spent about £250 including first purchase and repairs. Cheaper than buying rubbish.
