View Full Version : help us all expand

okay... i just decided that we should all share our favorite artist and album, no matter what the genre. so many of us listen to such diverse stuff, and many of us listen to stuff that's right under everybodies noses but we still forget about it. so i figured that if we all just blurt out our fav's then maybe we could all expand (or re-find) some good music. i'm not trying to do the "sounds-of-the-moment" thing.. but a sound of all times.
sooo.. with that, my all time fav artist is death cab for cutie, and my fav album of theirs is "we have the facts and we're voting yes". it's not in the electronic genre by any means, but it's so damn good (imho). it's just good heartfelt mellow rock.

i can't name a single favourite album, there's too many. i could list at least 20 perfect albums i guess and it all depends on mood and situation which ones the greatest at a certain moment.

yeh that's on the 36 chambers, a brilliant album. I love odb's flow on da mystery of chessboxin'!
which brings me to the two ol' dirty bastard oevres:
ol' dirty bastard - return to the 36 chambers
more gritty wu-style hiphop, includes "brooklyn zoo", "shimmy shimmy ya", etc.
and
ol' dirty bastard - n***a please
by now the odb had totally lost his marbles thanks to copious amounts of crack, fame, cocaine and other delicacies - aside from the catchy neptunes produced got your money it includes some a pretty diverse set of often overlooked tracks, like "good morning heartache" feat. lil' mo...

Another favourite few albums of mine are
GZA - Liquid swords, which is AMAZING A CLASSIC - tracks like 4th chamber, shadowboxing, lgold, fuck it the entire album bags
Raekwon - Only built for cuban linx, again unreal- a real mafioso album. bangs from start to finish, listen to the whole album.
Mf doom - Operation doomsday. if u aint heard this. shame on you
Public enemy - nation of millions!! ditto
De la soul - 3ft high and rising, genius prince paul production
nas - illmatic - grimey street tales but of the higest order
tribe called quest - low end theroy - lovely!!!!
NWA - straight outta compton - Fine gangster shit
Company flow - funcrusher plus ( weird and lovely)
many more..

@phil&aleks
have you checked gza's new "the legend of the liquid swords"? picked it up right before new years and I consider to be quite good as well...from wu-bangers to curtis mayfield-style stuff...
as for public enemy I think that fear of a black... is at least in the same league as it takes a nation...
busta rhymes' genesis album was quite good imho, some pretty huge synths & b-lines in that one for a hiphop album...
in a lot of cases I really prefer the 12"es over entire albums, e.g. dmx's "party up in here" over "...and then there was x"

El-P: "Fantastic Damage" is my album of the moment, and i now got a instrumentals album call Fandago or something.
im not sure that freaks like us can have a favorite album but i do have some that i listen too too much.
but funnily enuff and album that always pop's up in my compilations has to UNKLE - Psyence Fiction .. it is more than a masterpiece.. aperfect borderline of pop & electronic.. mainstream and underground both at once.. great collaborations and so on . u can feel the tension of the production of it, kinda like the way Pappa was a rolling stone was the real sound of the temptations. u can feel the hate hunger, & happiness all at the same time.
a must to everyones collection. it the 'Apocalypse NOW' of music

just horrible! while the music is ok (good work like görl's albums on disko b.), the singer & his lyrics are unbearable. it sounds more like rammstein than like daf and the text is about how bad america is. the subtitle of the track "der sheriff" is "antiamerikanisches lied". this is soo flat, so cheap and so very streamlined. instead of being mean and extreme and playing with powerful phrases delgado now wants to enlighten his audience, send a message - daf for a better world? to me this isn't what made daf so cool. also the metaphors are incredibly dumb. big disappointment for me, i really had expected something. just think of cynical attacks like "ein bisschen krieg" - still a better track for today's situation.
btw, new front242 stuff is the opposite, it's great, although not quite harsh either.

sorry but i have a zero tolerance strategy against german lyrics pseudo-intellectual student-style guitar music. of course fehlfarben are 'a bit' older. considering blumfeld, tocotronic etc. a threat to peoples' brains, i was curious to find out the opinion of the fehlfarben concering these as i knew those pretentious, ultracorrect bands were referring to to ff. well all i read was mutual laudatios, so: no, thanks.
also i read a quite bad review about the concert they gave here. the singer seemed 'absent', forgot lyrics (i.e. didn't do his job well) and on the pa pieces of paper were pinned: 'sellout', 'half price'. i mean how stupid do they think their audience is? this was supposed to be ironic i guess (you know: den wind aus den segeln nehmen), but in facts its so very dumb... argh! 'ok if they ironically admit the tour is a sellout, then it cannot be a sellout because they wouldn't admit it if it really was a sellout tour - then they would keep it secret and don't tell us' - this is the kind of thinking that makes me aggressive! lol
