In honour of my new avatar.

Mine is actually Quincy, but I'm sticking with Columbo for now.

COLOMBO for sure! With his tatty coat, cigar and glas eye. He`s cool.... Allways talks about his wife (that you never see) Loz, any afinnities?? :)

only 7 options were allowed, so I had to miss some out. I was mainly thinking weekday afternoon-style detectives. Morse was probably a bit too highbrow for the rest of these characters.

@Warren: I am a lot like Columbo. Only I'm not a policeman. I don't have a dirty mac. I don't smoke. I don't have a glass eye. And I'm not very good at noticing things. Other than that, just like him.

My favourite quote from Columbo is about his wife. He asks a Senator for his autograph for his wife, because "she's a big fan." The Senator asks what her name is, and he replies "Mrs Columbo."

I don't even think he's got a wife. That's the great thing about Columbo, he's such an enigma, we know nothing about him, not even his first name. Most of the stuff in the show I reckon he just makes up to piss off the guy who did it.

Who's the best tv detective?

Colombo.

Obviously.

I tell you, if jessica fletcher ever shows up at a party im at, im outta there... Chances of not making it through to the next morning gennerally fall to about 1 in 10 when she's about. I actually think its her whose doing the stiffing...

gypsy_cream

all she does is write "murder she wrote murder she wrote murder she wrote" ov3er and over again on a wee typewriter..

Paddy

definately. all these republican shindigs she goes to, and there's always somebody croaking it? when is that fuckin useless sheriff (who always seems to follow her around, no matter where she is, even if she's a million miles away from cabbot cove) gonna put two and two together and arrest her?

of the choices there I'd probably have to go for columbo, partly because he has a basset hound, closely followed by quincy but Detective Goren of Law & Order Criminal Intent is probably my actual fave.

I can't get into him much.
he kicked ass as pile in full metal jacket, but his character on that show rubs me the wrong way. I prefer to watch the original law & order. svu is good, but I always feel so dirty and depressed after watching it what with all the kiddie rapists and such.

good point Yer_Maw poster, but I think you will find that it is Hercule Poirot who is Televisions finest detective. With his moustache and Belgian chat, he is cuts a distinctive figure. Also his antics with close 'friend' Captain Hastings had the nation in stiches. the real question is which Hercule is the true Poirot?

why has no-one yet clued into the fact that jessica fletcher is always on the scene of these murders, it's very obviously her doin the killins and framing different people every week.

and whatever happened to that priest and nun detective combo, they were ace, can't remember their name but it had the dad from happy days as the priest... top stuff

I remember that. The nun was an ex-prostitute or something, wasn't she? She knew all these dodgy people, and how to cheat at blackjack, pick locks and hotwire cars.. in the name of the Lord, obviously.

if Quincy is being included Petrocelli should also get a mention, not strictly a detective but certainly moonlighted in that field and the beeb used to put him on in the ironside/quincy post neighbours time slot in my good ol' days on the Dave Grohl. ahh fond memories, plus he had a top theme tune with loads of moog and stuff.

The thing I noticed about Columbo is he would always "out" the murderer and explain to him/her how he figured them out alone with them with no back up and no gun.

I think Angela Lansbury did this too in Murder she wrote.
