Are you violent?

edit- (:) I'm sure you're not, it's just Plymouth has/had one of those seaside town type violence reputations like, for instance, Weymouth. I expect this has changed now though..)

Plymouth. Be afraid, be very afraid lol.

Club wise there's always the Dance Academy on Union Street. Remember to bring your glowsticks. *shudder*
Union street is great for fights. Each of the 3 or 4 times I've been on there at chucking out time I've witnessed pitched battles. The squaddies tend to start at one end and the matlows start at the other, and they all meet in the middle and batter fuck out of each other at 2am. Obviously the local psycho beer boys feed off the tension and it's usually a total frenzy. Even the old bill seem to walk about in groups of at least four.

That said, I've never actually got in any bother so, like anywhere, you'll probably see lots kicking off around Union street, but it's easy enough avoid it.

I've also been out around the trendy new bits down by the docks and there were some nice pubs, clubs and restaurants down there. Decent atmosphere.

There was another venue on Union street a couple of doors down from the Academy. Can't remember the name though, but they were doing some decent nights for a while. MH and some of the Pure Filth lads from Nottingham played down there so maybe they can remember more details.

There are some other forum members (like Nanobot) nearby in Exeter and I think they still put on some nights. It's not far to Exeter. Their website : http://www.z-bop.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.html

@TPJ. Thanks for the reminder of Weymouth. My twitch had just started to fade after 6 months in therapy but it seems to have come back after your post lol

I think the only good time I had in Weymouth was at one of Patricks nights.

I served 4 years. :)

i spent the night in plymouth in summer '04, on my way back from working in france. i had to wander round at midnight, laden with bags and shit, looking for a hotel that wasn't already booked up with ferry crew. it was a bit unsettling. total shore-leave apocalypse

I got married in a fort the other side of Plymouth sound and on one of the trips to sort thinks out we went out in Plymouth on a Friday night.

It really is as rough as fuck ... and I grow up in Portsmouth.

Everyone I know from Devon thinks it's a shithole.

I've only been there once... won't bother going there again if I can help it. Basically it's a big concrete box full of educationally sub-normal violent lunatics who joined the navy, went mad, then got drunk.

I grew up in and around Plymouth - spent about 20 years there.

On the plus side you've got:

some of the best coast and moorland in the country
clean air (more or less)
cheap hash
cheap booze
good diving (if you like that kind of thing)
tons of student house parties to gatecrash
comedy accents

On the downside you've got:

cheap smack
senseless violence in the streets after 8pm
nowhere to buy records
nuclear warheads in Davenport docks
miles to travel to get anywhere else in the country

I wouldn't have changed growing up there for anything in the world, but everytime I go back there now to visit my parents it gives me the shudders. Have fun!

If you ever have the fortune to land in plymouth, make sure you take the essential guide book. This has been floating around for a few years now, but it always makes be cackle as i remerber what it was it was like to grow up there.
