View Full Version : "loop based" techno ????

Recently I read an interview made to Neil Landstrumm that asks him about the "currently new popular loop based techno"...
I really admire Landstrumm and all his music, but he said something like this wasn't really "good" music and that seemed to be like "Industrial Trance" or something like that.
I don't really get it.... isn't a loop the base to create a good techno track ??? some techno is a repetitive rythmic structure, and that's what I think it makes it good !!!
When I produce a track, no matter which style, I start with a loop and then I add lot's of other ideas. Does that makes it bad ???
I think I'm a little lost here... what do you people have to say about this ???
link to the interview page... I dunno if posting it is good but here it is:

No its not the base i think!!! From my thinking is Neil right, Loop Based Techno is boring shit. But not in all implementations. Some Artists get it in a great interisting Form. From the fundamental idea its a boring style to make electronic dance music! I dont use it willingly.

If they're on about techno where the it's just someone muting and unmuting the same 5 or 6 loops then it's hardly new! People like the Advent (their later stuff) and Adam Beyer are the worst culprits of this kind of music I heard a Landstrumm interview a few years ago where he said pretty much the same thing as he has now.

yeh most techno is kind of loop based in a way, just by the beats/bars.... but i think he is talking about the more repetitive, loop based bang bang bang boring zzzzzz heard it all before, middle of the road techno
mr.shot
27th January 2003, 10:43
I wouldnt say it is boring to make loop techno. Take thomas brinkmann or other minimal stuff its mostly just a big loop. To bring soul and funk in the track is the way to make it livelier. I mean its not important to talk about the technique how you create your tracks. It have to sound good at the end!!!TRUST YOUR EARS!
thats it...
goinz

Yes Mr.shot you are right, so I said some Artists get it in a great interisting Form the looped Techno.

Regis and Female have produced some good stuff..but theyr're kind of the exception to the rule..I think a lot of producers are just lazy, and are more into the idea of being a producer, than they are into music....probably a good 90% of what proports to be techno a bunch of banging loops, or some cheeses knock off of the 1980's woth a vocoder thrown...however, there is still more good music being produced than I can afford to buy!

I THINK THE WHOLE BUSSINESS OF CALLING SHIT "LOOP TECHNO" IS FUCKING BOGUS.
techno is repetitive. folks are just trying to distance themselves from hard techno cuz IDM is the fucking trend de jour. fuck that . BANG OUT.8-()
Lady E
27th January 2003, 14:27
well i disagree with you there...
none of the music we have ever released is loop techno, neither is it IDM. there is another way, things can be banging without being boring
and loop techno can be good of course. i think what neil would probably have been referring to is its predominance and popularity in techno clubs, and the fact that a lot of it is pretty dull.
arar
27th January 2003, 14:30
..er whats IDM?, I dont appear to be keeping up with you youngsters in terminolgy...I had enough trouble when people started talking about EBM (Im sure it was never called this when I was dancing to it years ago...), maybe someone could write a guide for the unhip?

Granted, alot of "loop based clubby techno" is rather dull and unexploratory in its own right........but, IMO its down to what the
DJ does with those kind of tracks to make it sound interesting....
EG - Cut n Scratch, steam-roller style 30-40secs per mix, use of 3 dex to layer sounds........

looptechno = is for the easy dj´s i think. it´s not hard to think and almost every loop track fit´s with each other. well i can admire people with 3decks. but two is to little.
well, i´m sounding rude, but i do like some looptechno. like Adam, Cari and those lads.
but it´s deffinitly something that i wouldn´t play.
well, i suck !

Perhaps some people equate loop techno with banging and hard techno, thats because they are only "loop-producers".

ok here is a question no one has ever been able to give me a satisfactory answer on.
when does a minimal techno track turn into a loopy techno track?
to me there is almost no differnece.
techno (not all of it) has been loopy for ages, but now all of a sudden it has gotten this bad rap. so I am at a loss.
zombie ritual
27th January 2003, 21:21
Yeah techno used to be mainly loop-based, but in the mid-90ties people like Mills or Robert Hood or even Cari Lekebusch spiced it up with little unforeseeable details and a much more subtle groove than can be found in loop techno nowadays. Surgeon I think is back with really good tracks which are loop based as well but have a lot of things going on under the surface. On the other hand there was the extremely stripped down minimalism of early Mike Ink, Studio 1 or Plastikman that I still love, but which has unfortunately has gone lost. And one should always remember that minimalism was once a very refreshing experience for those who hated trance.

Thanks to everyone who has participated in this forum.
I'm still on doubt... someone posted that Adam Beyer and some of the lastest Advent work are that kind of "loop based" stuff, but I still see no difference between some of their tracks and some of the tracks the same Neil Landstrumm played on his Glamourama tour in tresor !!!!. At the same time, both Landstrumm and Advent have created albums in there.
Maybe... (I'm not saying that this is the truth) he was talking about that Psy-trance stuff. All of it is based on the same loop, a delayed bass. Also it doesn't have a "structure" and sometimes it's dull because the noises just come from everywhere.
Let's just let the music flow and don't categorize something that doesn't makes any sense, most of the continous beat techno is based on loops since the day it was created.
P.S. I still think that Beyer and Landstrumm are both great techno producers.

There are considerable differences in the music of Landstrumm and Beyer. Landstrumm uses actual little melodies, sometimes even harmonic changes. Beyer, as far as I know, doesn't do that. It's a looped pattern (or maybe several pattern) that is maintained from beginning to end of a track. Some Landstrumm tracks work the same way, but characteristically, you have several "Motive" following each other within one track.

I am very curious about these Shinkansen-trains in Japan. They must be veeeeeery fast. Our fastest train(ICE) is "only" 250-300kph fast.
Nevertheless it´s only a 4 hour ride from Frankfurt to berlin, 2hours to stuttgart and 1 hour to cologne.
Luckily I am living in the centre of germany.

28th January 2003, 12:03
Hm.. i think the whole discussion misses the point. It's not the "loop-based" or whatever-based-thing which makes a track good or bad, but the way it stimulates the little synapses in your brain. To badmouth music of any kind (ye ye.. i do this often enough by myself) is like to blame people for their different brainstructure for which they in fact can't help very much.

Is this some sort of group subconscious freudian slip that a thread discussing the relative merits of loop based techno has started talking about the railway...
da-dun-d-dun... da-dun-d-dun... da-dun-d-dun... da-dun-d-dun... da-dun-d-dun... (sorry couldn't resist)
Back to the topic, speaking none technically, I can see where you are coming from with the not being able to hear the difference between Beyer (although I haven't heard any new Beyer or Advent stuff) and Landstrumm. But I think you are wrong, there is a definite difference in the structure. With a Beyer production, everything seem to hang within the structure of a very definite loop that thunders throughout the whole track. The result is for me very formulaic music, with this sort of music it feels like there are only a few set types of records, and the producers just add their own sounds, samples and drums - someone could probably write a pretty decent piece of software based around that theory... Which isn't a bad thing, I mean at the end of the day if people can make this stuff and have the mixing skills to make something of it then great - its just not my cup of tea - Plus I think there's an awful lot of poeple who don't have the deck skills who just mix this stuff like Trance and that is boring...
Landstrumm rocks, and that's all I can say, I don't know sufficient enough about production or music to know exactly what he does, and maybe that's why I like him or that type of music - perhaps its not having total understanding that lets you just enjoy the music, using the your lower cortex and bypassing the higher functions that always analyse stuff...

YES!
I think I have it on videotape....
the helicopter was only 30 centimeters over the ground, when the blade went crazy!!
The worst part was, that I couldnt turn the shit off, cause it had destroyed the battery-wire to the remotecenter in the machine!! so it went on..... and on..... and on....... destroying a part of the machine each time!!! ahhrhrrr..r.r...
Still have the memories!

i also would like to have my lego back.....and it is worth a lot today (as far as i know) !!
Scaletrix is popular in the UK, but I spent 5 years of my childhood in Germany and Belgium and my dad bought a TCR (Total Control Racing) which was way cooler than Scaletrix, you could change lanes and overtake and they even had these blocking cars that went round the track slower and you had negotiate them - and it was in figure of 8 - I saw some track pieces in a secondhand shop in Leicester but didn't have any money at the time...
I'd love to get my old Lego back - I want to build all the kits in their original form - I quite like 'em they make funny ornaments - any way check this... its over a metre long...

Damn !! what happened here !!!
when I saw 81 replies to the topic I said WOW !!! I have lot's of interesting stuff to check out !!! but I found a conversation about toys.
Well, I loved to play with my robotech/macross action figures by bandai, also with a cheap/chinese/mexican-market version of Mazinger Z that actually was better than the original because the whole body could be separated into pieces !!! hehehe but hey....
-back to the topic please !!!!
Of course !!! Landstrumm and Beyer productions are very different, but what I was talking about was their Dj sets, both have the same amount of loop-repetition on some tracks. (of course I like Landstrumm a lot more hehehehe)
I finally found a difference between the "loop-based" and the "other kinds" of techno, it's just matter of listening to it. Definitely, "loop-based" or whatever you want to call it, is a lot more Dancefloor oriented since its easier to understand as Landstrumm said, but I think that's the way it should be, because I bet you that if you play some dark and experimental stuff to a crowd of people, more than the 50% of them will run out for a something more easy/danceable stuff. Well, it also depends a LOT where are you playing it of course.
It's more than obvious... you can't give more than 2 minutes on the deck to a "loop-based" song because it will be boring as hell. Just listen to Dj Mix Series Escapism by Ben Sims or to Dj mix seriex 5 by Michael Burkat... both records use a lot of "loop-based" and have more than 30 tracks, and that's because they know that they have to change the track or it will be the same fuckin stuff. And maybe not all of the "loop-based" (damn I started to hate that term) it's dull, Stockholm Mix Sessions by beyer takes some very good melodic and refreshing techno. (yes Weishaupt I also think that names are borders but I have to give an example here hehehe)
I dunno, I think this whole shit was senseless, at the first time the question is very ambiguous. I've heard a lot of bad fuckin techno in radio and clubs that make a lot of people dance, and in the case of my country, is something really sad, because the hardest Techno and Psy Trance makes the girls dance here, If you put them one of the best Landstrumm Basslines to them they just go out... believe me, is sad, but as I said... it also depends a lot where are you playing it.

@gunjack;
i think you are talking of transrapid (magnetic hover train).
i once drived with it on the "test road" here in germany and must say it is really fast (about 400 kph) and totally quiet inside...they should built it up instead of "normal" trains.

how long and where was this test road?

sorry for being OT once again, but i disagree on that. existing german rail is in a bad enough situation, it would make much more sense if the state helped out the "bahn" with this money instead of spending billions on realising a single sci-fi train. also in my opinion it's much more important to stop the flood of trucks on the streets, and that's only possible when the "bahn" is cheap enough. the transrapid brings nothing but prestige, and it's just been bought by the chinese even though there was no 'real' track in germany (company always claimed they'd sell no trains if there was no long track in germany).
also there's more advanced rapid trains that work on usual rails, they just don't look as spectacular. but ok, if anybody is able to build it from his own money and doesn't build it into protected nature, why not.

hhhhhmmmmm.....c.s. i must say that you are right with your opinion !!!
but do you really think the "bahn" will ever be cheap enough to get the trucks away from the streets ??
i don't think so....just take a look at the new tariff (right word ?? ) and i think you already recognized that it got more expansive for most people.....but okay i don't have a clue about what companys have to pay for transporting their goods, so i am not sure about !!!

of course influence must be taken by the state, they're already planning this "lkw maut", but at the same time they should help the "bahn". currently everythings going into the wrong direction there. get less - pay more. also the problem with "lkw maut" is that it puts even more financial pressure on logistics companies, and already today there's thousands of traffic accidents every year caused by truck drivers falling asleep while driving, just because they have to drive for 20 hrs for their company not to get bankrupt...
well and this is the point where we really should move the discussion to the "what's this world coming to"-thread. ;)

I really enjoyed the early Drumcode stuff & think that Beyer produced some great tracks- Landstrumm was also producing great stuff. Landstrumm still does, Beyer doesn't. The seriously large amount of shit Loop techno that has been released doesn't mean that all loop techno should be given a bad name.
SIMPLE REALLY!!!

The problem is that this uninspired loop techno sells very good and why should the producers change this kind of style?!

because one would hope that people create musick for more than sales figures, when something becomes a product any magick that was once in it soon goes. I understand people make music for all different reasons, but would assume that people on this board feel strongly about the integrity of musick and the scene. if people don;t get a chance to hear things that are different then producers will keep making the same old shit as they know it will sell, and after all that brand new porsche is much more appealing than artistic integrity. my 2 pence worth.

I agree with Irrungenwirrungen... the last drumcode stuff started to sound the same fuckin shit... but at the same time I think that any record company can suddenly change their style.
I can't predict what is going to happen.
And take a little look at the peoples taste, Vogel played with Space Djz. Abslutely, In my opinion, I like Vogel stuff more, but Space Djz are still cool !!!.

i think looped based music can be fascinating (i.e. joujouka) When it comes to loop-based techno, it can quickly become boring. there are some producers who can still find awesome new ways to relate thoughts through repetition (Surgeon comes to mind) the banging' percussive jugga-jugga-jugga stuff all begins to sound the same after awhile.
all music is usually built upon loops or repetition. i think its unavoidable.
Gas (Wolfgang Voigt) repeats the same phrases over and again but i find its simplicity calming. it is the sound textures he uses that create the depth within the track.
have we beaten this horse dead yet?

i think
loop techno is cool
it doesnt change
so it makes it easy to mix&match quicker
and its so striaght forward its easy to manipulate and do
wierd tricks with and stuff. there are many great uses for loop techno. but it really does suck when you here a whole set of some
boring ass degenerative dj where every tune
sounds the same and hes not even tryin to jack it around or do anything cool.
