I love Susumo's ambient stuff - Grinning Cat is one of my favourite LPs and I hadn't really been into 'the boy & the tree' until the other night when it just started to sound amazing. funny how that happens sometimes.....I've got to say that I find most of his house output pretty uninspiring though! As for soundtracks, the Akira soundtrack still gets a play every now and then - along with a CD of japanese chamber music that will send anyone to sleep in 10 minutes.

I also love Haruki Murakami - he's probably my favourite author and just starting to get quite big here in UK (got his own display in Bookers on tottenham court road) - I've just started 'Sputnik Sweetheart' and can see that it's going to be absolutely fucking heart breaking. Has anyone read 'wind up bird chronicles' or 'hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world'? - they are some serious shit.

I think what Japanese writers/musicians/film makers often bring to their art that westerners don't is a proper appreciation of simplicity and how to make 'less say more' - both murakami and yakoto manages to wring the most awesome emotions out of very simple elements. There's not many western authors who can that without sounding pretentious/boring.

"the wind up bird chronicle" was amazing. i highly reccommend that book to anyone. he's a damn good author. however, i wasn't too impressed by "south of the boarder, west of the sun"

the princess monoke soundtrack was too classic-style for me.
my favourite soundtrack ever will be the akira soundtrack.
much more orientated to japans traditional music than mononoke.
the ghost in the shell soundtrack has one really huge track.

btw i´ve seen brother and didn´t liked it. somehow the director lost it in the calmess he tried to achieve. was boring for me.
there are other japanese movies i prefer like visitor q (sort of shocking/exagerated)...
