Gotta be Chris Foss...

http://stalker.hautetfort.com/images/medium_vraifoss.jpg

he was commissioned to do a piece for Games Workshop, mad as hatter... it was supposed to be a cover for a sci-fi battleship game, everyone was so excited about getting a spaceship painting from the master of spaceship paintings...

Couldn't believe it when it arrived it was totally and utter shit - I think he got paid and they just never used it. No one had the guts to tell him it was rubbish.

there was another guy who did a load of GW paintings when I was into it. Can't for the life of me remember his name. His early stuff, mainly pen and ink was really good, and his later stuff was really sketchy and rubbish. And I think someone had stolen all his paints apart from Black, Red and Yellow.

He had a big beard, if I recall. Grobs, can you put me out of my misery?

it's John Blanche, probably the man most responsible for Games Workshops style and imagery - he did a a lot of the concept work - his style become quite sketchy and loose and a lot of customers would criticise his artwork. When you're 14 you don't want evocative artwork you want the art to look like the miniatures - which a couple of the other artist did very well.

I had the pleasure of doing a photo documentary of one of his bigger paintings for the magazine - really amazing to see a painting build up over a period of weeks.

Any way he could still do the overly fussy style that is common to fantasy and sci-fi art and did do every few years or so. Such as this:

http://www.warpartefacts.com/acatalog/images/john-blanche-sister.jpg

BUt for the most part he always wanted to get the raw ideas down and keep the energy - so that generally meant drawing with biros, toothbrushes and inks.

At one point he made all the new artists do their preliminary sketches with biros. His theory was that because the biro has quite low friction compared to ink pens that it's more loose and better for getting your raw energy and ideas onto paper...

Any way enough nerdy waffling from me...

that's him. I remember he painted minitures in the same style and colours, too.

I'm not sure I'd even like his paintings if I saw them today. Maybe I'll dig some rule books out the loft and have a look.

all this artwork is about crazy anal detail isn't it.. great when you're 11 or something... pretty repulsive I find these days.

I still like the dead simple B&W 2000AD inked style though.

john blanche is the man. learned a lot from him when i was a white dwarf subscriber. his artwork has that dirty and twisted touch im missing in most fantasy artworks.

he he I remember this issue, they made a citadel miniature of the dwarf. Looks like role playing geeks became techno geeks. Actually I've got some techno and electro 12"s with a Warhammer 40,000 theme. http://www.discogs.com/label/Art+Of+Perception
