View Full Version : Mixmag - fucking amazing news
V Knid esq

Mixmag has been bought from the dreaded EMAP (the company who cunted up The Face and Smash Hits) by Development Hell, who publish the great Word magazine... Andrew Harrison who is an absolute chap and a big AFX fan is the new editor and the brief of the magazine is going to be opened right up from the current content. Best of all I'm going to be doing a lot of work for them... this is gonna be really good news for all wonk massive.

Doesn't matter what's on the cover as long as good music gets coverage.

Sounds good, it'd be nice to have a decent music magazine to read again. The only one I used to like was Eternity.

that is excellent news! to echo je:5's sentiment, it's about time there was another music magazine that can cover dance music left of mylo without going nathan-barley-skinny-tie-twat

Congratulations Joe! I am very, very chuffed for you. I've always been so disappointed with the rubbish they hype in MixMag - roll-on quality. I only wanted one page saying here's all the decent wonk

i can't believe its still going... started reading it around 90-91 when it was absolutely vital reading, but kicked it into touch in 97 when it got too horribly shit... unless i fancied an impromptu wank over some fluffy bra club chick :!

Phil should be a roving reporter doing video diaries at Gatecrasher and Tidy Trax parties.
actually, that could be pretty funny.

Funnily enough, that's how I read it in the first place. Had to do a double-take.

these magazine's review sections always amaze me, they have sections for house, trance, progressive, downtempo, drum n bass.... AND NO TECHNO REVIEWS SECTION! amazing. talk about forgetting where u come from. is it just the american mixmag or is the uk one oblivious to techno as well? even if there were a techno section i bet it would be full of minimal etc. what happened to good ol techno? bah, dance rags suck, knid you got alot of work to do before mixmag becomes relevent again... good luck to ya bro!
Loz

I think there is a lot of snobbishness in dance music against techno. It seems that people who are into house, trance, drum n bass, whatever, hate techno, or will say that they do. They still associate techno with boom tit boom tit music, or Jeff Bloody Mills playing the same loop for 20 minutes.
It is odd, because pretty much everyone I know who's into techno loves loads of other stuff, too.

Nah, that's booty bass.

yea techno is a dirty word for sure, but its hilarious because these fuckers wouldnt have a mag without it!
then you find the black dog reviewing oliver ho and rob hood in the "experimental" section of the mag.... WTF? if rob and oli aint techno then i am a giant purple oompa loompa

yer man, I was talking to Younsta (the grime/d&b DJ) today and he said he thought he didn't like techno until he heard some old Richie Hawtin and now he gets why people love it so much and realised that must London techno has now lost the trip.

Isn't the reason Mixmag didn't review Techno because it sells less than the other genres? I always thought it was cold hard boring economics.
Sounds good though Knid, still won't buy it but might read it for free at train stations now :)

V Knid esq
17th February 2006, 13:01
Not an enormous amount compared to other writing gigs as it goes, but the perks (i.e. being able to get lots more free wonk music and being able to hopefully boost sales of my mates and people i respect) make it more than worthwhile

'll never forget your first ever music review in the Wire. I copy and pasted it.
Drexciya
The Countdown Has Begun
I first heard a cowbell in a field. But never a cowbell that sounded like a cow was a bell. This is the only sentance i can used to describe the sounds of Drexciya. Drexcyia make music. Black man music. Music for a man of African origin to bang his chest hard. this is adult, arousing, bedroom, blue, come-hither, cuddly, erotic, flirtatious, hot stuff, inviting, kissable, libidinous, mature, naughty, provocative, provoking, purple, racy, risqué, salty, seductive, sensual, sensuous, shady, slinky, spicy, steamy, suggestive, titillating, voluptuous music.. whilst also being assured, bet on, bold, brave, cocksure, convinced, courageous, dauntless, depending on, expectant, expecting, fearless, high, hopeful, intrepid, positive, presuming, presumptuous, puffed up, pushy, racked, sanguine, satisfied, secure, self-assured, self-reliant, self-sufficient, sure, trusting, unafraid, undaunted, upbeat, uppity, valiant BUT NEVER debris, dregs, dross, junk, litter, lumber, offal, refuse, rubble, rummage, scrap, sweepings, trash, waste. 5 stars/
