Have just assembeled a very basic recording setup in the cellar room of our house. Mixer my dad made me, maplin stereo mic, straight into pooter. For the first time in about 15 years I actually have a static setup, enabling me to just sit down and record something, which is what I did tonight. Anyway, I felt like 'it' earlier, so just sat down and improvised something on the guitar. Beware - it's very loose, and VERY sketchy, but is possibly the first time I've attempted to improvise to recording in many years. I know it's a bit flaky, but I was rather chuffed that there was ANYTHING there at all. MP3 at:

ftp://86.4.16.231/

that's about it for now. Oh, and the descision to tune the g-string down to f sharp was purely on the spur of the moment, and I don't know why I did it.

Thanks folks. I'm hoping it'll be the start of a rocky road back towards actually composing stuff. From little acorns etc, blah.

Actually, listening back, it's really ropey. I reckon there's about 15 seconds I like. But it's better than nowt.

Cheers numbnuts. Would be nice to have a wee pocket of space somewhere - me ftp server on home pooter is rather unreliable. Might even spur me on to produce stuff a little more regularly.

Should bung those bits up in Steev's webspace like he says... "Things I recorded in my cellar whilst drunk".

I'm trying to work out what constitutes good improv conditions. At the moment, all the evidence points to 'NO BOOZE'. I've found it before ... leave off the booze for a week or more, and the music starts to come. Must just be neurones creaking back into action.

lol ... no steev, I didn't actually know it was you. Although the eye looked awfully familiar. Now there's a line. I thought you were an uncommonly generous stranger.

oo .. that was something I recorded when I ssaw steev logged on to msn the other night,.. sose as I could send him a pressie.

actually... bin improvising around spence's version of 'coming in on a wing and a prayer' ... his take on the bass harmonies rocks. he the boy. everyone go and listen to joseph spence. The folkways recordings are the best I've come across... most of the rest are when he was working - he was a manual labourer... so his hands got focked. I've not checked out his stuff with the pinder family though.
