i think it's out in the stores on video/dvd. wouldn't recommend lending the german edition though. those fucking nazis cut about 17 minutes of it out if i remember right.
see that's the big disadvantage living in this country - the rulers still divide art into good and bad. they didn't learn anything from the past, even worse they now mask it with pseudo-socialdemocratic 'we must protect you' talkings. yeah right, i'm sure sure our ancestors also only wanted to protect their people.
i hate them for doing this, and if i would ever be out there revolting on the streets that would be my impulse. FREE ALL ART OR DIE SUCKER!
umm, back to the actual topic battle royale is big fun! the scene where takeshi stands up answering his phone after he has been mashed by the machine-guns speaking. that's typical japanese for me - totally whack!

there's a film coming, maybe it is out in your countries yet that is called 'VERSUS'. i think that is gonna be a blast.
havn't seen it yet myself but friends told me that it's really good - kind of martial arts splatter whatever. i pray that they don't release a cut version only here in krautland but i fear my prayers won't be heard.
c s
18th January 2003, 20:32
re:splatter - well if it's just the fun of watching intestines coming out and fountains of blood it's certainly not my cup of tea. of course films may contain violence, even in an extreme manner, but it should serve some artistic purpose.
some people really seem to enjoy pure splatter without a plot - well, this is something for teenagers i guess, or for studying the effects...
a nice example was alien IV - absolutely no atmosphere anymore, no tension, but all efforts where spent on creating the most disgusting effects. they were all the film consisted of - how boring.
in other films such as starship troopers for example, the splatter elements fit in very well (i know it's not real splatter for the real hardcore fans).
it seems i was the only one who couldn't enjoy said-to-be 'masterpieces' such as fargo in the 90s - what's so funny about a guy trying to hold his brain back from spilling out of his head? and most of all, what was new about it? yeah i'm too intellectual, ok... ;)
well, battle royale seems to have a real story according to the websites. so i'll try to download and check it out...
i didn't like lord of the flies btw. it smelled like racism and colonialism to me, and i had a disagreement with my english teacher. lol

real trash that's really funny is because it wasn't meant to be.
amble
18th January 2003, 21:30
well of course theres lots of films just replacing the plot with all sorts of violence. but theres so many good ones as well that have both violence and a great story - thinking about stuff like Bad Taste or Hellraiser (and Rambo 3 of course lol ).
you don't like Fargo hmm? i'm addicted to this movie. i think this vision of a gangster-epic is far better than flicks like pulp Fiction and the likes just because it's so real. those characters are all so properly worked out with all of their spleens and ticks, down to the smallest role. it's funny, when i saw it the first time i found it far more darker and crimelike than i feel about it now. this is getting funnier every time i watch it.
MUX
18th January 2003, 21:37
i kinda took Fargo as over estimated as well...

I dont see the point of gore for gores sake...BR is a good movie, actually without that much gore...I dont think its that similar to lord of the flies by the way..I havent read LOF in 30 years, so I cant remember if William Goldings take on the situation is effectly racist, do you think hes implying that "tribal cultures" are all brutal, or that western civilization is in fact just a thin veneer? or that we are really all just afew meald away from killing each other..its another book that just full of males (from what I can remember)...

the fact that only males appear in the book didn't strike before, but it's right and somehow it fits my image of the book. golding was a former royal air force pilot for example. to me the type of 'civilisation' promoted by the book has a vibe of... hmm... how to put it... is reactionary and quite conservative or so. he not just sets up the 2 opposing states of being, being a cruel native or being a civilised man, he implies that for being civilised it is absolutely necessary to be a well-educated english boy.
the way that admiral appears at the end of the book is remarkable i think. like a saviour from above he lands on the island his white uniform and asks "what has become of our good english children ?" or so - well, today i would ask myself if this is probably ironic (i doubt it), back then i took it seriously. order is restored by members of the army, representants of the highest possible state of civilisation... i think he tries to sell us military education as a means against cruelty - quite one-dimensional or even very wrong. the fact that only males appear fits it well.
and then there was this nice sentence "you're acting like a crowd of painted niggers!" - it is spoken, if i remember correctly, by a boy who realises the situation better than the others. so that way this sentence was 'promoted' in my ears. it would've been different if an idiot who doesn't have the reader's sympathy spoke it. so it's "painted niggers vs. good english boys"?
yes it's about the thin layer of civilisation, of course. and the basic diagnosis may be right - i just don't like the therapy he seems to suggest.

Crikey watched this last month with a bunch of my mates when we were quite stoned. I'd spent the first half hour of this film building a lightbulb vaporiser so hadn't been following it fully then when that was done I got completely stoned out my head.
I thought the film was all about Scientology and I also started to think I was tripping or something as all the subtle cinematics effects and transitions were really well done and very freaky. I'd say this is probably one of te best directed films I've seen in quite some time.

Damn Gunjack, you've got me back to rights! The only reason I post on this board is so that people will have an image of me as an intellectual. My self esteem is so low that I have to wander the streets in Mortar Board and black cape so that people will respect my intelligence. Thats in between discussing weighty matters on boards like this, and making sure that I always have "intelligent" reading matter on display on public transport.
Lets face it what other motive could anyone possibly have in asking someone else what they're getting at?

dogtown and z-boys. a really cool documentary about the birth of modern day skateboarding. it showcases the rise and fall of the zephyr team which included classic skateboarders like jay adams, tony alva, and stacy parelta (who directed the movie). its got tons of cool old footage from the 70's including the famous del mar skateboard contest of '75. anyone who is into skateboarding even a little bit should check it out! oh yeah and it also has a lot of cool old heavy metal and punk songs to boot.

yeh what I think is amazing about some lynch films like blue velvet or eraserhead is that it's really difficult to place them into the time that they were made - there's nothing in Eraserhead really to suggest it was released in 1977, or in Blue Velvet that it was released in the 80s (aside from perhaps Isabella Rosselini's "big hair" in that movie)...
