be afraid of a program called 'reason' even though the name suggests otherwise - often recommended for beginners by people afraid of competition who want to keep the good stuff for themselves. lol
instead try out real tools like reaktor, absynth, fm7 with cubase - logic is rather useless now on pc as it won't be updated anymore. while reaktor is a from-scratch-construction kit, you can get to results more quickly with fm7 and absynth. i could imagine especially absynth is good for beginners as well as the signal flow is very obvious and you can even draw waveforms, and as you're into graphics... fm7 has a very clear interface as well - in my opinion.
and get waves plugins, too.

They are I'm afraid. But they are the best you can find.
If you want to start with freeware I'd suggest:
Audiomulch (http://www.audiomulch.com) , Bidule (http://www.plogue.com/) , and Smartelectron:x (http://www.smartelectronix.com/software.htm) (especially the effect plugins by destroyfx and my buddy Bram).
What style of music would you like to make?

i didn't know all of those. argh again downloaded 15 new plugins - when to test them? i haven't even really used the great ones from destroyfx.
my buddy Bram
it's not bram bos who did "hammerhead rhythm station" which was released (with limited features) by steinberg as "b.box" ?

as i suggested, cubase (sx). you might also try out sonar - i worked with cakewalk (predecessor) for some time and i really liked the interface which is a bit more logical. but with sx cubase became logical, too. problem with sonar is that you can use vst-plugins only via software adapter.

Reason is Crap.
hmmnn yes and no, it's an out of the box trance machine by nature so yes crap.
subtractor synth is weak. yes crap.
and the mixer seems to have some wierd/cheap compression on it so bypass that. yes crap.
effects are way way below professional standard. yes crap.
etc. etc.
but... in conjunction with CubaseVST it's wide open for almost unlimited abuse :)
load up your own samplenoise into a few instances of the granular synths/drum machines/samplers and then add the ability to modulate every conceivable parameter of those synths/drum machines/samplers with controllers/pattern sequencers/other synths/other drum machines....
then rewire each individual out of the samplers/synths/dms into their own VST channels, apply VSTFx to those multiple outs, throw in a few VSTi (fm7, reaktor, quadraSID, Pro52), etc, etc.
it gets to be a powerful and twisted little baby.

MUX, have you got any experience with trackers (especially fast- or impulsetracker)?
if so (even if not) i got a solution for you that is not too difficult to work with and quite cheap: RENOISE. that's a tracker of the highest standart as far as i can see now. i downloaded it a few days ago since i still have problems setting up cubase sx, well anyway i haven't tested out anything yet but what the product description says is quite impressive. i think one of the erutufon-mb-crew-members is responsible for this lil thingy - taktik. big up for that one.
you get a free(!!) version as download and a better version only costs about 49$ (think it has better support for ASIO, VST - nothing you have to worry too much about as a beginner).
so don't spend too much money on sequencer-tools (7-800 € is way too much imo) and get some proper synths instead. the best solution with the highest amount of possiblitys is REAKTOR i think.
takes a while to work through but it's worth that time - this software is massive!

nope :)
Bram as in Bram de Jong, driving force behind Smartelectron:x and musicdsp.org (http://www.musicdsp.org/) (for the hardcore geek), lives in Gent (Belgium), like me, the other Bram is a Dutch guy.
Disclaimer : I am not Bram Bos. I did not code Hammerhead. Wazzntme.
