jesus christ, the review i wrote just last night takes on a whole new meaning...

There once was a time when men were men and crisps were crisps. Seaside holidays; Beeb on the telly; Saucy postcards; and good times munching on a packet of salt and vinegar golden wonder. However, as the global juggernought that is globalisation steamrolled its way across the planet, it was only a matter of time before our very own golden wonder would be its next victim. American outfit PepsiCo decided that little known Leicester crisp maker walkers would be the perfect vehicle to land a slice of the uk’s lucrative crisp market. And with the help of the town’s famous son and Willie Thorn friend Gary Linekar, crisps went global. The feet of Golden wonder was swept right out from under them, as Walkers began to metrosex-up the rules of crisp making by forcibly changing the colour of the (rightly) blue packet, using a vast marketing muscle that Golden wonder was never going to be able to compete with. They faced a dialemma in how to compete in this new world order, and thankfully made the right decision to stick with what was loved about the one-time number 1 snack. No gimmicks: they were just going to get up every day and keep doing what they did best – a tactic that the head honchos at walkers just don’t seem to, or dont want to understand. The inevitable downside is that the golden wonder empire is not what it once was, feeling more like the crisp equivalent of Saturday night t.v. After briefly succumbing to the walkers way - despite their best efforts in keeping their rival out of my local supermarkets - the oft derided Ken morrison takeover of Safeway has meant that once again a multipack of golden wonder sit proudly in the cool, dry, place in my home – because the fact remains, that even after all these years, I still think a packet of walkers is going to taste like cheese and onion. A true British institution.

10 gold bags.
