there is no difference between the two, they are synonymous.
p.a. stands for public address.

public address always makes me think of
"Would the owner of the Red Volkwagon Estate, registration R153GTF, please return to your car. You have left your lights on."

I always think of speeches. I never really understood why they even bothered using the term p.a. but you don't really see it used much anymore.

with digital djing & playing live and so forth the distinction between dj & live seems less and less appropriate. although if you're only doing tracks with no editing or 2 tracks i guess it would be djing..but pa seems pointless to me as well...

oh shit i always thought that pa was perfoming artist and live was just spinning live instead of inserting a cd, how stupid must i look now :(

It means
public address
which implies generally low quality "piped" sound as in railway stations, hotels etc
This can be a distributed supermarket or railway station announcement system, or a high power sound reinforcement system to amplify a music band
I think it also means Professional Audio but im not sure???
PA = Public Address, or Pretty Awful (particularly railway stations)
VU = Volume Unit, or Virtually Useless
PPM = Peak Programme Meter, or Practically Perfect Meter

p.a = personal appearance

:O
I used to think that PA refered to "Power-Amplifier", the equipment used generally to provide sound to the speakers, so I supposed that LIVE PA meant a recording of a live set directly from the "Tape out" from the Power-Amplifier or from the same outputs but from a mixer... :P

wow! where did all these alternative meanings come from?
P.A has ALWAYS meant public address (refering to the sound system), and stiill does. and doesn't mean anything else. simple.
In the day of their invention, P.A systems were very useful, and at the same time, utilitarian: a jack-of-all-trades but master of none situation. The amps were neither bass amps, nor guitar amps.. designed for human voice, they did a bit of both, but were vital if you wanted high output that could handle lots of inputs, several outputs and a wide range of uses.
Now, there are some incredibly good qualitiy ones, and frankly, if you regularly need to set up a system at a gig and have a large setup, then that is what you need. The front-end of most clubs' systems is a P.A.

no, it means both things. PA System = public address, Live PA = personal appearance. PA in your knob = Prince Albert.

really? thats a new one on me.. has it been the case for like decades and I haven't encountered it, or is it a fairly new thing?
It sounds like something that might have come along with DJ/club culture (because prior to that, why would it NOT be a personal appearance by a given artist)

It's been that for ever... it applied to personal appearances by celebrities before that, e.g. a soap star opening a supermarket or whatever.

I was told LIVE PA stands for Live Performance Arrangement.

how come PA doesn't apply to djs then?
I mean a dj is making a personal appearance, are they not?

Over in Europeland they tend to call any recorded peformance (djing or otherwise) a liveset. Hence the website livesets.com I find this very confusing...
