really? I was kinda NOT awed by it. It was a good film, but nothing stood out as groundbreaking for me. The director was great, and because of him, Kong was painstakingly given emotional attributes. That made the film. The rest was ok acting, good but not amazing effects, a pre-written story that people labouriously ponder over, explaining how Kong isnt REAAALLLYY a monster. yeah... we geddit.. shurrup.

What DID bowl me over, inspite of my reluctance, was The Chronicles of Narnia. Its the only time my mind's eye HASN't been spoilt by a hollywood movie trying to do a classic book that I loved as a kid.

Imo - too long, went to see it in a shit cinema as well so it felt like i had that deep vein thrombosis shit by the end of it, some of the cg was well naff as well - one bit of the end (the chase) looked like it'd been lifted right from a playstation - the stuff on the island was cool - made me wanna play rampage in'it.. would have prefered to see it in the house though really - had a few joints and that with it.. other than that i say just above average but thats just my opinion anyhow.

well I saw it on the largest screen available in this country, and I quite enjoyed the movie - nothing special plotwise, but it's King Kong, so who would've expected anything more? The first part of the movie could've been a bit shorter, but on the other hand I did feel like this was a good tribute to the old movies and the old style film making... good popcorn flick

liked the insect bit. rest was a bit cack. but I can get with the big screen probably being better. wayyyy too long for me. I was doing the same thing as in LOTR 'get on the bloody boat frodo!' or in this case 'fall goddamn you kong!'.

saw the best flick I've seen in a long time on the w\e though 'the constant gardener'. awesome film about big pharma companies and diplomatic intrigue in africa.

Dunno what people mean by shoddy effects - I thought they were fantastic - maybe some of the tracking landscape shots were a touch unconvincing but the dinosaur fighting and Empire State scenes are just breathtaking - I felt sick watching Kong and Anne on the skyscraper - a real sense of vertigo.
The best effects are the in the insect cave scene - some truly horrific creatures that made the kids gasp the most.
The freakiest creatures were some truly hideous black penis worm things with retractable foreskins and toothy bell-ends.
The film slightly lets itself down with some clunky dialogue, esp the last line of the film. Jack Black is a poor choice for an actor - he can't really act - his only real skill is in being sarcastic - when he's supposed to be conveying deep thought, he simply moves his eyes from side to side.
But all in all, a great adventure movie - it even made me shed a manly tear - Kong is the best actor in it, even if he's all CGI - he manages to convey some very complex emotions with just his eyes, which is quite an achievement - especially when contrasted against the crappy CGI werewolves I saw earlier in the trailer for the second Underworld film.

yeah i was gonna put an edit in saying how good the chimp was but never got round to it- there was just one bit in particular that springs to mind where he was chasing the taxi, it was just an incidental view from above but it was just dodgy i thought..

[edit: i'm probably being picky cos i had to sit in a packed cinema for too long though]

What about the Narnia film? Despite all the Christian stuff I'd quite like to see it, did like the books as a kid (they made me the devout christian I am today).

quite a good adaptation. not as dark as the book, but pretty close, I was surprised by how close they got actually. does seem a bit childish now that we are old fogeys though.

I specifically liked the last line of dialogue in movie, spoken by Jack Black. I thought it was a clear reference to the type of endings you used to have in movies like that, and I also thought that Jack Black did a surprisingly good job - his character was a pompous son of a bitch that liked blowing smoke up peoples asses and managed to convince himself that he was doing the right thing (at least superficially) along the way.
