Humm.. I just spent an hour playing with the demo version. I don't get it, why do people like this program? Sure, it makes playing prerecorded compositions in a synched manner easier, but as a compositional tool in-and-of-itself it seems pretty weak.
Can somebody explain to me in short and user friendly words exactly what features of this puppy make it worth the $$?
Maybe I never understood the "loop music" ethos.

think like a dj with 8 decks and an infinite number of mp3s, all of which are tempo-synched.

lol
Ableton IS a good *live* tool, I don't think it's meant to be a compositional tool. And it's way too expensive for what it does.
Funny thing is that "everybody" seems to be using it: from Styrofoam over Jan Jelinek to Funkstörung.... I'm sure their music is suffering from it.

i'm surprised to find the first sceptical comments about ableton here on the board ! lol and i share them - while it's a very well done program it just didn't fascinate me too much to mainly playback pre-made samples (i think there was a thread about it here months ago). why should i play back samples when i.e. with reaktor i can combine playing back samples with synthesis & endless kinds of modulation among everything ? ok of course reaktor hasn't got the impressive realtime-sync-feature, granted, but generally there's much more freedom.
i guess the reason for ableton being so extremely popular is that it was promoted as the "first all-in-one virtual live instrument" and got many people's attention that way.

too cpu intensive it is.....i had problems with the full version, i like the xp quality and bubble interface but nothin new except pitch harmony across the board.

'last night a Dj stole my wife'..?
criticisms aside, it's a great dj tool, man.

Ive tried the beta of Live2 and various demos...Ive got a cheap laptop and Im skint, so I got the cut down steinberg labeled version (Remix £30) because of my limited set up and the fact that I dont need midi sync, the only thing Im missing in functionality is the crossfader and pre listen..which doesnt matter much since I only have one soundcard.....I dont see it as a compositional programme at all..its pants for that...I write my own loops and tunes on another prog and then can load them into remix to create malliable sets..there are limited on board effects, but Ive got a kaoos pad so thats not so bad..I think for "live software" its the best I can afford...I agree that the full price ableton at over £200 is a bit steep, but probably not if your a gigging Live pa or dj artiste who gets paid occasionally......my laptop is a crappy 650 with only 192ram, but I dont seem to have cpu problens at all...it runs a lot better after I optimismed my system having seen the link to the tascam guide on this board....

No Bitchie, I'm not bitter.. just drunk... .. and bitter.
Ok, I guess I am a bit bitter, but wouldn't you if your parents shipped you off at a young age to a convent where the nuns roller skated around in form fitting, dayglo habits and the the mother superior gloated down upon you from her pinnacle behind the 30 foot JBL speaker system (spinning the disco hits of the day)? It still sometimes flashes back to me at night.. the horror.. the Marathon dance sessions filled with grade a Colombian coke.. Carrying the Mother Superiors vinyl in those lill plastic milk crates that nearly made your fingers bleed every time... the non stop orgie of power that they all basked in.. *sniffle*..
..
..
.... .. At the least though, in stead of popping your hand with a ruler they would simply feed you a few mics of acid and force you to take it from the man himself--but he was still a stuffy old cunt, if you ask me....
wait, where am I?

ableton live..top for playing live..only
i wouldnt use it to write tracks with.
and it would be even better if it played midi files so i could hook up a micro modular to it.
unfortunately my laptop wont run reason and ableton very well at the same time...but ableton rocks for live performance

Yeah, maybe.. but I'd be far happier with something that allowed the same fluidity in pattern movement with midi over audio.. wasn't that opcode's vision sequencer?

I must agree to C S.
It is much better to synthesize and modulate in realtime AND play back samples as you like, to create
the GUI as you like it, etc.
Anyway, Ableton live is good for remixing and post-arranging tracks.

Live is a great tool for live P.A... you can't denied it... how come people like Dandy Jack - Akufen or the major live performer with laptop are using it!?
I hook up live sync with my MPC 4000 and 2 MicroModular... and I can tell how it's rock!
With Reason you can rewire on the fly what ever you like and it cut it in a perfect loop in a sec.
Don't have to go by wavelab or so...
Now u can rewire live 2 as a slave and using it in cubase... really cool for a surround creation.
What ever u will say... it's a good tool!!!
