love about 40% of incubula, the rest of it I find a bit boring. Amber is not quite as good imo. Tri Repetae and LP5 are my favorites closely followed by chiastic slide.

I'm a massive fan of the Lp5 and Chichli Suite, still can't get enough of those two...

Incunabula is something I never picked up until recently despite owning the early EPs and Amber. I used to hear it a fair ammount round at friends but it's been years since I heard it and it stands the test of time pretty well. Speaking of the early EPs, I just checked out The Anti EP listing on Discogs. The second comment sounds like it was written in Babelfish, he keeps referring to cakes, I think he means records, and who's the long bold clerk?! Bissia - 19-Oct-05 10:32 AM Bissia - 19-Oct-05 10:32 AM
The 'Ambient Soho' shop had just closed, damn we were too late and already bags half full of cakes from other shops in the area but the little Indian girl owner felt we weren't from the U.K. or something ... She was still in the shop with the long bold clerk and two other clients hanging. She came back at the door and let us in, closing back directly after us. What was currently playing there was so amazing, that I stared at the clerk and asked directly for that record. He told me 'No', I felt like falling down in the abyss, 'I can't sell it, it's not out yet, it's a test-pressing'. I insisted as I found that track so great 'I need it now, I know white labels, I buy lots of these, this one is fantastic, I can't leave without it, please, I'll pay you 3 times or your price, whatever'. 'I'm really sorry, I can't do that'. 'Well I'll have to wait until it's out then, test or not it has to be' I concluded, then asked 'Who did this?' (I didn't recognised directly Autechre's music, even if I had previous cakes from them) and while I was totally under the sonic effect of this piece the guy at the turntable pointed me at these two guys in the shop 'They did it' and my all space travelling mate 'Eiffel' gave the duo our little label contact card. 'Ow! These are the guys from the blue record' he told, pointing the logo to his companion: 'Aah! yeah.'. 'What does he said?' asked Eiffel to me, 'They know our records' This is Rob and Sean ... I returned on the continent without that yet unreleased Anti EP but we had unforgettable good time at Megatripolis where I got tuned for too long into a Californian VJ software named Bliss. Back home I urgently broke up the seal, as an opposition to the Criminal Justice Bill and of course because I could not wait any longer to listen to that new Autechre. Each records brings his memories ... memories can't wait. lol

I didn't think they really got it together until Tri Repetae. I did really like the Garbage EP though.

Spot on! It's too easy for peeps to simply write of the first couple of albums cos they're comparatively lacking the complexity of Ae's later works.

In '93 'Bass-cadet' was the next-shit!

Still fiending for an Ae RnB LP tho'... :(

autechres first album was responsible for the onset of my 23rd puberty. we used to play it lots in our (legendary) backroom sessions. when i hear it now, it evokes lots of lovely memories..thanks for reminding me graham, shall dig it out again. pointless naming "the best autechre record". it's always a time and place thang.

we named our daughter amber partly because of said album also..

i've heard sean and rob quietly busting the most incredible electro sets live, soooo many arrows in their quivers....

I'll quite happily fight anyone who dares to say it's not a fucking legendary album of the most titanic proportions. Some of the greatest electronic music ever recorded IMO.
So far ahead of it's time, compared to most of the stuff that was getting made/released in 93.

Authechre shot themselves in the foot really, as much as I like Amber and Tri Repetae there are only about 2 tracks on each LP that I really listen to when I dig them out. The string one and the bassline one on Trip Repatae are some of the best tunes they've done, but the rest of the LP doesn't do very much for me compared with the whole LP of Incunabula.

incunabula was a real eye opener for me. I happened to be in the Warp shop the day it came out and bought it... around Xmas 93 I think. I think it was the most uncomprimisingly electronic thing i'd heard at that point, I had to force myself to listen at first. A long smoky christmas did the trick.. and everyone else was caning Portishead I think.

This was the first thing I got by them after hearing it on the dancefloor at Oscilate in Birmingham. They played live there a few months after and blew me away.

Yeah I was there. Oscillate was nice.

I tell you my best Autechre related memory.. selling all the early Skam and Clear Gescom records to rich californian kids on IDM.. for silly dollar.. :-p

Are you talking about Lego Feet?

One of the best AE tracks is their remix of Gescom on this release.

I was talking about the Gescom EP. (http://www.discogs.com/release/195) I forgot that Lego Feet was them too, I don't have that. I see someone wants $175 for it on discogs! (http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release_id=1926)

I've really tried hard to like Autechre, but it just doesn't do it to me. Just always sounds like there's something missing. Like this is music that is really trying hard, perhaps too hard.

Nah, just never managed to get it and there's lots of music over the years that I've gone back to and fallen in love with, sadly Autechre isn't one of them...

i rate autechre. like pretty much all their releases for different reasons.

Giving it another go, I live in hope. My music tastes change and things I disliked some years ago, often become firm favourites...

Sadly it's not happened with Autechre...

But the first 3 LP's and all those early EP's I will always hold in high regard.

I didn't see them live on their last tour, but I have the MP3 of their London show. Sounded fucking wicked, also very cool that they didn't use a computer sequencer.

It's just a shame that their recorded output is so middle of the road these days. If I wanted a maths lesson I'd listen to Carol Vorderman.

it is all rhythm. no math just fucking rhythm. and they still have a sense of melody. it is all there. not fucking just math.

I'm surprised that you liked the live show and don't like the lp, I think they are quite similar. Some drum bits from the lp appear in the live show.

The beats on the live show are more fluid to these ears, everytime I try and listen to the LP I just find the rhythms too disjointed. Although I do prefer them to Confield.

Honestly I really tried to like it but it just does nothing for me.
