Anyone think there will be a season 2?
Loz
29th November 2005, 21:44
dunno.. it kind of all wrapped the story up nicely in the last episode, didn't it?
Could go either way, but I'm not sure Morris will bother, he's rarely been someone to keep doing the same thing for a long period, I suspect he'll move off in new directions.

Mad improvement needed though, after episode 3 it got a bit samey upon reflection. The 13 yr old coke addict model was a nice touch mind, shoreditch to a T.

I thought the last episode was pure Morris terribleness though, really picked up for that one

i'm not so sure if there will be a new series, at least for the time being. i read in the guardian at the time that the tv executive in the last (or penultimate, can't quite remember) episode was based on c4's head of entertainment (or someone anyway... the cunt with the greasy hair and glasses), and apparently he wasn't too happy about it

It was pish. I think www.cookdandbombd.co.uk have got it about right (scroll down through their news stories to see their take on it).

Agreed, given Charlie Brooker and Chris Morris's combined talents it should have been much better. All the lead actors are doing stuff on BBC 3 now anyway.

Just to check, I went back and listened to some old On The Hour tapes, and I kept laughing out loud even when I was concentrating on other things. Barley barely raised a smirk.

Thing is they assumed because they can write funny sketches (Morris) and columns (Brooker) that anything they do will be funny... doesn't follow sadly.
Loz
29th November 2005, 23:36
I can't remember how many times I laughed during watching it, and avoided watching it for a few weeks before enough people convinced me to try it. But even if I didn't laugh very much, I still enjoyed it, and even gave it a second viewing.
It's not as good as On The Hour, The Day Today or Brass Eye, but it's still pretty good tv, even if it's not going to win a bafta.
(Did you see how I cleverly avoided using the "it's better tv than the rest of the shit that's on" argument, which is clearly the shittiest argument ever)

29th November 2005, 23:38
No, the problem is that people expected too much and forgot to enjoy it. That, and everyone who thinks its pish fancys chris morris - bitter.

Absolute pigs nipples. If I expect a lot from something and it's funny, then I'm glad because my expectations have been vindicated. In this case, they weren't. It was pish.

It may have not been up to his usual but it was still well enjoyable - it was always going to be different due to the format it was written in. i just found the cookdandbomd site hilarious putting the internet boot in to their, lets face it, poster-kiss hero. I can just imagine them tearing them off the walls now.

Cook'd and Bomb'd reads to me like uber-cool indie kid bollox about how "I only really like the ever-so-rare Chris Morris that you've never heard of". Twits.
It wasn't that shite. Made me laff several times an episode. It just wasn't as good as say "The Day Today".. but that was fucking amazing.
edit: It just occurred to me to wonder if they hated it because it's taking the piss out of them? :)

i liked nathan barley. in fairness, the first time i saw it i was hardly rolling around on the floor, but i caught the repeats of most of the series as well as seeing them in the friday slot, and it was definitely funnier second time round. it might've seemed a little self-consciously wacky at first glance, but i think the humour was somehow a little more understated than that of most of the rest of morris' output, believe it or not. in fact, much like most of the rest of morris' output, it certainly rewarded multiple viewings
anyway, there's my dreadfully pretentious two cents

exactamundo spandex. some of it was funny. some wasn't. ive given up criticising things in a hollistic way. all the things i like are massively flawed, but have good bits that contribute to life uniquely.
which sounds a bit grandoise when applied to a tv show.

This is probably true but my initial response was that they were about three years too late in sending up Hoxton. I admit though that, as always with Morris, the devil's most probably in the detail.

"So anyway, what you have here is the targets of the show lapping it up...which is grimly amusing, as the Dan Ashcroft character does seem to be based around Chris Morris' loathing of a certain section of his fanbase. "
hahaha.

It was ok, my morris favourites were 'brass eye' and all 3 series of 'blue jam' on the radio.
I agree with Spandy about 'cook'd and bomb'd' I used to hang around there looking for 'blue jam' downloads, and I've never seen such a bunch of blinkered fan boys, they live in cloud cuckoo land like most obsessive nitwits.
But morris does seem to cater for this sort of behaviour, 'Barley' was full of fan boy titbits, especially for the little dribbling monkeys who freeze frame the dvd to catch some little morris nuance hidden in a poster or piece of the set.

na! it was spot on. Having worked for dot-coms and with a lot of web designers, it was tight. the only thing that amazes me is that these Barley cunts still walk round Old Street/b-right-on and can't see what cunts they are...
and as for that Cook'd and Bomd'd site: "The first episode is lacking in the subtlety and imagination that you'd associate with the best of Morris's past work. In fact, the lack of subtlety - along with Morris's dreadful directing - are the major problems. The show is very badly directed, shots are woefully framed with wilfully crap camera-work, and there are needless flashy zooms everywhere." Think the bloke needs to laugh at himself... I think the irony is obvious. what a cunt!

re prev post:i know, that is wanky. but i must admit i also get quite annoyed by over-wobbly direction, whether it's ironic or not.
it was ok, clever but not all that funny. i missed a good few episodes tho and am looking forward to seeing them. my fave bit was when dan ashcroft was on stage, it was like a bad dream. and all the bloke making music bits which as with most morris music pastiches was spot on, an excellent pisstake of pointless electronic noodling
it spawned quite a few catchphrases as well.

i enjoyed it, i didnt think it was all hilarious, and yes, it wouldve been more potent with stronger characters, if it had come out a while ago etc etc///
re: cooked and bombed... yes, NB was restricted to those who are familiar with shoreditch/london media types.. but so fucking what!? your nob always going to make something as total as the brass eye paeodophile episode.
not as good as brasseye etc.. but alot better than that "my wrongs film" he did.. which i found neither mindbending/unsettling nor funny.
one thing that did disturb me in NB was the techno/muso guy..
a pretty accurate onstage jamie lidell/tim exile hybrid!

I think that was intentional. Especially as by the end of the series you see that Dan Ashcroft is as much an idiot as Nathan Barley is, only Barley revells in his idiotness, and Ashcroft likes to think he's better than them.
Sums up everyone who thought they were Ashcroft perfectly, I reckon.

There is definitely no second series commissioned for NB.
Brooker hasn't been idle though - he co-wrote Sppons which is funny in places (probably the sketches that Charlie wrote)

I reckon if he'd done a few years earlier it'd would have been right up there with Brass Eye and Day Today...
Or maybe I've got it the wrong way round and it is ahead of it's time, it's hard to tell when you are submerged in somethign vaguely related.
What about that Fake News show on BBC, it's like the Day Today with the bollocks cut off - how long ago did Day Today come out?

I think that's the beauty of the Barley thing.. the moment you become sure that they're talking about someone else.. you HAVE BECOME THE CUNT. Brilliant. And if you find yourself thinking "well.. i'm not sure.. so I can't be a cunt".. THEN YOU'RE STILL A CUNT. It's unavoidable. Either you're a cunt and you know you're a cunt.. or you're a cunt and you don't know it. Recursive genius. Cunt.

I've been rewatching it on C4 and I'm coming down on the side of brilliance... I think watching it all in quick succession helps. Or maybe just a year or so of ever-spreading 'me-too' culture...
Those natty Windows adverts definitely help... Middle aged, old hippy farts uploading their weblogs and photos albums from Bangladesh etc.

In fact someone should test that out - get a dozen or so hippy mums/grandmas, give them a brand new windows laptop (as it comes from the shops), a digital camera and parcel them off to the nether regions of he globe... and see who actually manages it.
